One thing I think he’s giving short shrift to here is that issues of politicization and eroding public confidence are inherent to a system that essentially gives the last word on American politics and policy to nine superannuated political appointees beyond the reach of any discipline or control.

Words of burning truth from a Jewish prophet This is my credo, more or less:
"My faith has been tempered in Hell. My faith has emerged from the flames of the crematoria, from the concrete of the gas chamber. I have seen that it is not man who is impotent in the struggle against evil, but the power of evil that is impotent in the struggle against man. The powerlessness of kindness, of senseless kindness, is the secret of its immortality. It can never be conquered. The more stupid, the more senseless, the more helpless it may seem, the vaster it is. Evil is impotent before it. The prophets, religious teachers, reformers, social and political leaders are impotent before it. This dumb, blind love is man's meaning.
"Human history is not the battle of good struggling to overcome evil. It is a battle fought by a great evil struggling to crush a small kernel of human kindness. But if what is human in human beings has not been destroyed even now, then evil will never conquer.'

I just don't care about any ~law enforcement~ story coming out of this administration because the idea of this man enforcing laws is preposterous on its face. We're talking about an arsonist doing fire code inspections. You're a sucker if you engage with any of it in good faith

Remember that Republicans believe that the first spike there, caused entirely by Putin's invasion of Ukraine, is actually Joe Biden's fault while the second spike there, caused entirely by Trump's war on Iran, is also Joe Biden's fault.

Regarding political perceptions on disinformation, climate, health, inequality, and other lines of research, it might help to revisit my opening speech from the 2025 Cambridge Disinformation Summit:

"...we cannot ignore that there are political forces right now who seem to present an existential threat to our independence and who will falsely accuse us of bias when we defend against that threat.

They tend to deploy legal, reputational, institutional, and financial weapons to shut down or silence independent research on topics like climate, health, inequality, or information risks.

This puts us in an untenable position where the research community has to defend against their actions to remain independent.

If your actions threaten my independence, then my defense of my independence—which I will defend unapologetically—does not make me biased.

In fact, our work requires evidential support, ethics panel approval, peer-review, and editorial consideration. While not infallible, our research process deserves more credence than the typically-unvetted claims from actors with glaring conflicts of interest who try to discredit our research en masse.

The fact these actors threaten us indicates that our work has impact. I want to reiterate that last point. They would not threaten our community if our work did not matter. So, we convene here to continue our work."

Candidates & parties shape what they promise & say based on what (they think) pleases big donors mainly because they believe money is pivotal. But a big part of why it's pivotal is JUST BECAUSE EVERYONE BELIEVES IT IS. It plays a fairly minor direct mechanical role in winning elections.

I’m not sure what efficient is supposed to mean here. Fascism is corrupt and inefficient. If the issue is that fascism moves quickly, unburdened by the need for consent, etc. I would say the same applies. Just take a look at the reflecting pool and the White House.

Please, can we just not do the thing we always do where we treat election counts being reported over time as if it represents a back and forth contest? No one "takes the lead in early vote counts" - the votes have been cast already.

There are some very useful theories that use social construction as a jumping-off point, but if someone just stops at, "[Phenomenon] is just an illusion of crowdthink," that's as helpful as arguing policy by asking, "How does anyone really *know* anything?"

The entire point of civilization is that suffering does not have to be hereditary. Your parents’ misery is not a debt subsequent generations owe them, it is information that tells us where the world failed them, so that we may build one that fails fewer people.
