Verifying reports on iRecord - never realised there's so many feral Wall Lizards living in England. People also increasingly using AI to (mis)identify common animals which then get reported as species alerts.

That's a wrap on 25th year of the intensive Marsh Tit study at Monks Wood. @martamaziarz.bsky.social & I colour-ringed all new juvs, we think. Adult survival good but recruitment low, likely related to drought/heatwaves. Extreme hot/dry or wet/cold weather in spring-summer seems to hit juvs badly.

Exciting new Science paper from colleagues in Lund: Sweden’s primary forests store ~72% more carbon than managed ones. The gap is way bigger than anyone thought — especially in soils. Big implication for climate policies @lund-university.bsky.social

Two interesting things: 1. by 1964 the squirrels in nature books and public perception were already Grey. 2. the Rooks collecting acorns. Jays get all the press for dispersing and planting acorns, but Rooks do it a lot too, and are likely also very important dispersers of oaks. Magpies too.

My second favourite article in the @transdiffusion.org #ATVShowBook (transdiffusion.org/atv-show-book/) is this one from 1974, where the British writer is so unfamiliar with 'Sesame Street', or indeed anything that has happened since 1776, that he thinks 'cookies' are cakes. Bless.
"One of the favourite characters is an incredible ball of animated fluff called Cookie Monster, who is hooked on cakes. Given a choice of a 10,000 dollar cash windfall or a cream bun, there's no contest: he takes the bun."Top: Julie Andrews with Ernie and the guy he's cheating on Bert with.

Bottom: Julie Andrews on her own, but convinced that she's talking to her imaginary mammoth.

Sandwiched between a 'fine trout' and the North Wraxall bus, perhaps the first press reference to the name of Stonehenge's timber neighbour #OTD 100 years ago: "where—as an aerial photograph has revealed—once stood a many-circled 'temple' of wood…to which the name 'Woodhenge' seems likely to cling"
Cutting from The Wiltshire News, 8 October 1926 (via British Newspaper Archive):
"Admiral Sir Richard Poore, of Winsley, is the owner of the land at Tollerdown, near Amesbury, where—as an aerial photograph has revealed—once stood a many-circled 'temple' of wood, the only one of its kind known to archaeologists. A number of curious 'dots' on the aerial photograph attracted attention, and investigation showed that each dot represented a circular pit dug into the solid chalk. The pits are arranged in seven concentrie rings, and there is reason to believe that they originally held wooden posts or tree trunks. Over 75 pits were discovered in the half of the circle that has been excavated (which is 200 feet in diameter). It is suggested that this circle, to which the name 'Woodhenge' seems likely to cling, may be the site of a construction made on somewhat similar lines to Stonehenge, which is about a mile and a half distant, but with tree trunks used instead of stone."Aerial photograph of "the so-called 'Woodhenge'", reproduced in the Illustrated London News, 19 March 1927
