Evening programmes 50 years ago today, from the Stoke Sentinel. As ever, ATV and Granada's schedules are wildly different, only really coinciding 8pm-10.30.
BBC-1, BBC-2, ATV and Granada programes after 5pm; BBC Radios 1-4 and Stoke, and North Staffs Hospital Radio.

I wasn't even resident in the ATV area growing up, but their programmes were a big part of my life all the same thanks to the way ITV was structured. Programmes made by different regional broadcasters helped to make the country feel more connected.

ATV were behind some of the shows I loved most as a child - Tiswas, The Muppet Show, Pipkins, and the shambolic and best first series of Bullseye - so buying this is a no-brainer for me. Good luck with this and everything you do.

Not a patch on the Zoom 2 jingle, but a really interesting insight into what might have been. Any fans of the history of British TV should investigate their book. It promises to be authoritative and interesting. A glimpse into a bygone era of British broadcasting- and social history.

In the mid-1970s, ATV commissioned a package of jingles from Johnny Pearson, which included new daily start-up music and a new ident to replace Zoom 2. Here's part of that package. Also, buy our book now for November delivery: transdiffusion.org/atv-show-book/

You may note that 'Emergency — Ward 10' relaunches tonight. Previously much more like a soap opera, its new format is more like modern day 'Casualty', largely self-contained 55-minute episodes replacing the ongoing 25-minute stories it had done for the last 950 episodes.

Evening programmes for today 60 years ago from the Shropshire Star. The amount of programme variations between ATV and Granada are huge — enough that it's almost redundant for the Star to list Granada's stuff "as ATV except…"
A page of TV and radio listings, in the order ATV, BBC-1, Granada (as ATV except) and BBC-2; radio is Midland Home Service, the Light Programme, the Third Network (Third Programme plus the "Radio Everything Else" sweepings on the frequency, as opposed to Network Three, which is everything else except the Third Programme) and Luxy. Last night's Tomorrow's World gets a capsule review; Bill Smith reviews tonight's documentary on inventors on BBC-1 at 9pm, the relaunch of Emergency: Ward 10, and Rediffusion's Hippodrome variety series made for export.

A look at what was on TV and radio in the Midlands 70 years ago today, from the Birmingham Post and the Coventry Evening Telegraph. Sloppy compositing at the Telegraph: the 8.15 swimming is actually on the BBC, while This Week is being described using its slogan rather than its name.
Birmingham Post listings for the Light Programme, Midland Home Service, BBCtv, and ATV; regional variations for the London (properly, 'basic'), North, Wales and West Homes Service; and, as an afterthought, the Third Programme.Coventry Evening Telegraph listings for the Midland Home Service and the Light and Third Programmes, BBCtv and ATV. The Toddlers Truce is still in effect: no TV between 6pm and 7pm so children will not be distracted from their bedtimes.

This was done under pressure from Mary Whitehouse. In the 1970s, she had pressured ATV to do something similar (a white genlock square from the same source as the cue dot for adverts). In both cases, it drew extra viewers, sometimes doubling audiences, because of course it would. Daft old bat.

It's easy (and fun!) to criticise Edmonds, but the way he handles the studio audience here once the cameras are officially off, and how he facilitates the studio guest being well served, are a masterclass in how to deal with these disasters. But as Jon hints: the meetings after can only be imagined.

1961: Rediffusion, Granada, STV, TWW, Anglia, TTT, Southern, Ulster and Westward break the strike by ATV staff at Elstree. ABC… less so, bless ‘em. It warms the cockles of my little socialist heart, even though they did it for arch capitalist reasons.
Throughout this Saturday evening the Company was heartened to know that all the other programme contractors supported ATV andtransmitted its programmes except ABC Television which decided to put out its own re-arranged programming.

3D model of the BBC1 Christmas Symbol from 1966. There are two rows of snowflakes at the top and bottom of the screen. There is as caption at the bottom of the screen saying "Christmas BBC1". There is an orange and lemon coloured horizontal bars across the centre of the screen. In the middle of the bars a circle is cut out, through which you can see a lit candle against a purple glittery background.
