Ingredients for a 'cheap night out' warm them gently until sugar dissolved. Paint on tree trunks then check after dark. A good way to attract moths eg the Blue Underwing or Clifden Nonpareil Catocala fraxini a spectacular moth that is now regularly recorded in south Devon

Rainbow Sea Slug Babakina anadoni with its prey the Hydroid Candelabrum cocksii - great find by Daisy Wood, Wembury Point, Devon at the weekend. The Olympus TG cameras are great for rockpooling able to withstand impact of being dropped on rocks and also completely waterproof - I use at TG6

Great to see the Red Data Book Gravel Water Beetle Hydrochus nitidicollis on Dartmoor, Devon. This tiny water scavenger beetle is confined in the UK to Devon & Cornwall it hasn't been seen for many years so good to know it is surviving on at least one clean section of river here. Our largest moth the Death's Head Hawk most obvious when compared as a pupa to Convovulus & Hummingbird Hawks. The Convovulus pupa has a 'jug handle' extension where its 10 cm long tongue develops. The DHH lacks this as it has a very short tongue used to suck honey from honeybee comb.

Great seawatch at St Ives Cornwall yesterday From minute counts of close Manx Shearwaters I estimated 50-60K moving west 6am-2.50pm but many more were moving further offshore. Good views of Gannets & Arctic Skuas I missed highlight probable Barolo's Shearwater picked up by @liamlangley1.bsky.social

Rockpooling highlights today a huge 20 cm long Depilatory Sea Hare Aplysia depilans (one of three seen) and a pair of Velvet Swimming Crabs Necora puber - the male guards the female until she sheds her shell as it is only at this time that he can fertilise her.
