Exciting new Science paper from colleagues in Lund: Sweden’s primary forests store ~72% more carbon than managed ones. The gap is way bigger than anyone thought — especially in soils. Big implication for climate policies @lund-university.bsky.social

Higher carbon storage in primary than secondary boreal forests in Sweden
Boreal forests provide considerable global land carbon storage and uptake, but they are being rapidly transformed to managed secondary forests, with poorly quantified implications for ecosystem carbon...

That's a wrap on 25th year of the intensive Marsh Tit study at Monks Wood. @martamaziarz.bsky.social & I colour-ringed all new juvs, we think. Adult survival good but recruitment low, likely related to drought/heatwaves. Extreme hot/dry or wet/cold weather in spring-summer seems to hit juvs badly.

With the acorn crop seemingly non-existent in much of England this year (following the huge masting event last year) it's not surprising that hungry Jays are turning up at the coast as they run out of road in the search & competition for food.

Dogshit alley. Every nature reserve has one, on the paths nearest the public entrance, where the public bring their dogs to defecate, and spoiling it for everyone.

Verifying reports on iRecord - never realised there's so many feral Wall Lizards living in England. People also increasingly using AI to (mis)identify common animals which then get reported as species alerts.

Nice to see Dorian get this recognition. He's also a veteran of the CEH (formerly ITE, now UKCEH) research station at Monks Wood, until the station closed in 2008 and he moved to BTO before retiring.

Often see this on juv Marsh Tits in autumn - hard blobs of material stuck to the bill. It's solidified pulp from sticky berries, where they've been extracting the seeds. Maybe honeysuckle, bramble, wild service, dogwood or hawthorn; hard to be sure which (or all!).

Garden Reeves Pheasant now looking rather splendid, having completed her post-juvenile moult. As an escapee or deliberate release, all alone, she hasn't got much future beyond hanging out in the garden until something 'happens' to her (likely a cat, fox or car).

The fledged garden ducklings have now all dispersed, all 40+ of them. But the undercover Reeves Pheasant is still here, having escaped/released from somewhere. Easily overlooked as a Common Pheasant, the females have a distinctive face and tail pattern. Wings remind me of Grey Partridge.

Finally caught & colour-ringed the female mate of our 11 yr old Marsh Tit. She's only 16 months old and arrived in the wood in April at last minute to breed, having dispersed from elsewhere - itself a major feat. Her life expectancy now is maybe another 1-2 yrs, if she's careful/lucky.

Great photos: Marsh Tits are obsessed with Honeysuckle berries in Aug/Sept, methodically removing the seeds for caching (and eating a fair few). They do it for hours at a time and might be significant dispersers of the seeds. I wrote about this in the book: www.bloomsbury.com/uk/marsh-tit...
