Seriously, unless you're going to call me a "scientist" for helping my son with his class volcano project and call me a "physician" because I applied a band-aid successfully, please please PLEASE stop calling any random crank who shits out a book about the past a "historian"

I don't think one could use it before the Treaty of Verdun in 843; before then I think we have to talk about varieties of Franks. But it is an interesting one, including the context of Normandy - how exactly did the non-Norse population of Normandy identify, before and after Norse settlement?

Out of interest, when do we start speaking about the French, as opposed to Gauls or Franks? (Accepting that it's all artificial, that several terms will co-exist and will vary across space at any given time...). I've a vague assumption it must be around the 700s?

By "French" I don't mean absolutely without Norse ancestry, but I do mean culturally French; and the insistence that they were "really Vikings" is essentially racist (which is why Goebbels liked it and C20th French medievalists rejected it.)

I had an interesting chat on this subject here a month or two back and revised upwards my assessment of just how many original settlers there were, but yes.

It's also long enough for those vikings who *had* initially settled in Normandy to forget sea-raiding and learn how to ride horses. 4-5 generations and out of living- or directly handed down memory.

The answer to both questions is easy enough if you accept that these French-speaking people from France were in fact French.

As Normans, why did they so easily forget their sailing heritage from Scandinavia? Or were the 1st Normans Scandinavians who got sea sick & vowed to never get on a boat again. I can sympathise. From whom did they learn their equestrian skills, which are also not so easy to pick up quickly?

From today's copy: rural housing policy in a nutshell: 'The [parish] council was opposed to the building of starter homes in the village because there were no jobs for young people there. In 1993 there was a further debate about starter homes but no decision was made.'

finger bar mowers were also in corners in farmyards, I don't recollect horse drawn tedders amongst the abandoned kit, maybe faulty memory or perhaps easier to scrap.

I don't recollect any of these, my family made small bale hay, then round bale plastic wrap haylage. Much silage made where I grew up but I only recollect forage harvesters, maybe I have forgotten older kit being used, or by chance did not see it in use. www.forum4farming.com/forum/thread...
