"...on the way to Theresienstadt… it will be quite a time until you get any more news..." On 2 October 1942, Dr Hans Schmoller sent this telegram to his sister in law who had emigrated to England. A month after sending the telegram he died at the hands of the Nazis in the ghetto.

Lviv was occupied by the Soviet Union in September 1939, and then by Germany from June 1941. Approximately 6,000 Jews died in the violence. This photograph was taken by a member of the Wehrmacht, and it shows his comrades photographing a pogrom.
