Ok so like I’m not out here trying to make fun of any one person in particular, but also I’m just gonna say it: every motherfucker who is, like, so specifically an architect of our current misery that he can be named as such, looks like his ass was drawn by George Grosz, and that’s just how it is. 🤷🏼‍♂️

The Facial Expressions of Tethys by artist Julius von Bismarck. A suspended high-sea buoy that moves in real time. Sensors on a twin buoy out in the Atlantic Ocean send live satellite data to motors inside the museum. This makes the indoor buoy copy the exact, real-time movements of the ocean waves.

New from me for @bettergov.bsky.social: As usual, most city departments stayed within their budgets last year. Also as usual, the police department didn't, with overspend larger than most other departments' total budgets.

Escapes. Fires. Rebellions. Trove of records reveals chaos inside Illinois county jails.
Illinois county jails report thousands of “extraordinary or unusual” incidents every year, but the state doesn’t keep track. So we stepped in to shed light on what’s happening inside.

[a satirical Chicago CTA transit map showing a giant red circular train line extending high into the sky, deep into the earth's mantle, and through Lake Michigan.]

"CTA Unveils New Circle Line Design: New line takes advantage of newly discovered third dimension.

Stations along the route include the Jane Byrne Interchange, Sears Tower Skydeck, Bean Access via Structural Firepole, Wreck of the Silver Spray, Future Stadium of Upper Mantle Bears, Hole, and Lowest Known Wacker Drive.

Additional diagram notes indicate that the train is shown to scale, Navy Pier is intentionally ignored, the color red was chosen for the line to confuse tourists, and highlights the Jean Baptiste Point DuSable Sedementary Divide."

It's Friday. I wrote a poem about the spiders who are trying to kill me.
Poem and art. A poem titled, "Ambition" with a black and white drawing of something that might be a spider. The poem begins on the left side of the page, has one line in the middle of the page, and then continues on the right side of the page. The drawing of the spider is on the bottom right.

The text of the poem reads:

"The spiders here are bold.
They stretch their thin lines
all the way across the sidewalk,
from fence to wall,
hoping, I think, to clothesline me,
knock me to the ground,
then rush out to secure me
before I struggle to my feet.
Perhaps they dream of
dragging me into their halls,
to feast like Vikings
at the never-emptied table,
hosting foes and granting rings
and singing songs of victory
about my death."

 It has not worked yet.

Every time
I walk on through their traps,
hardly even pausing in my stride
to let them think they had a chance.
I am a hammer
to their nets and hopes,
inconsiderate and blunt.
And yet, despair does not claim them.
They are persistent hunters,
for every time I take another lap,
and come again into the space
that runs between
the fencing and wall,
I have to wipe away a brand new snare
that some ambitious spider
spun across my path
in futile hopes of glory.

One day, bold friend,
you might be king among the spiders
and fete your shield-kin on my heart.
But not today."

The drawing of the spider is a black and white ink-pen drawing, made of abstract shapes and lines. The spider appears to have wavy hair, which is a little concerning, and deformed pincers. This is not an accurate rendering of a spider, but don't tell it that. It has skeptical eyes.

All I'm saying is that the early medieval period might not be suited to Wikipedia's standard formats...
Summary of the Battle of Assandun. Under strength it has "unknown" for both parties. It then moves onto casualties and loses, which are summarised as "heavier" and "lighter". And even this is a guess based on the result...
