ICYMI: I wrote about the way that AI is being used to devalue musicians isn't all that new in an industry that has always tried to cut the humanity out of the process timjl.substack.com/p/copyright-...
The marriage of the capitalist political economy and technology has long been a disciplinary and disempowering tool for the musician. The invention of the gramophone was quickly seen by theatre directors as ‘a way of eliminating noise from the wings and pressuring musicians in the case of a strike.’7 Long before AI showed up, the record industry’s willingness to treat artists who might sound similar as interchangeable meant that ‘musicians and performers [were] separated into two classes: the stars of repetition – disembodied, ground up, manipulated, and resembled on record – and the anonymous functionaries of the local festival, minor bands, residue of representation.’ What is the scraping done by AI models if not but the continuation and development of this disembodying process?

Was singing Mendelssohn's Elijah in choir rehearsal yesterday and the bass next to me showed me a warning about the decibel levels that had popped up on his smartwatch. I didn't think I was singing that loudly 😭

New piece out now! With Max Richter's comments about AI undermining copyright and threatening musicians' livelihoods doing the rounds, I wrote about the place copyright occupies in the history of music, and the necessity of confronting its role in the raw deal musicians have had under capitalism.

The Battersea Dogs and Cats Home 'Purr Minister 2026' is cute and all but uhh did they get anyone to do a sensitivity reading www.battersea.org.uk/about-us/new...
Open-Door Mandate: All interior doors must remain open. Leave does not mean leave. Cats reserve the right to enter, leave, re-enter and reconsider without explanation.
3:00am Readiness: Nightly zoomies and yowling are essential to national security.
Property Rights: If it exists, it is ours. If it is on a table edge, it belongs on the floor.
Stop the Dogs: Cats retain supreme authority over dogs, dog beds and all disputed soft furnishings.

At once the realisation of white nationalism and the production of fascist aesthetics. (That said, emphasising that migrants are law-abiding and contribute is a trap. Legality is a shifting line in practice, and racists will claim migrants & Black people are intrinsically criminal, irrespective.)
