Listening to the Schnittke viola concerto at Usher hall last friday was truly an amazing experience. I can't stop thinking about that piece of music even now.

New PISA data out England is now top ten in all three areas (reading, maths, science) and the second highest performing country outside of east Asia (after Estonia). This is a huge public policy success.

I know it goes against the new emphasis on “devolution = good”, but I’m quite uncomfortable with the some aspects of the mooted education reforms. New technical education routes for 14+ are a good thing. But I worry that devolving design will disadvantage kids in areas with weaker economies.

As far as I can tell @neweconomics.bsky.social wants the BOE to create money and lend it to banks at near 0%. As this new money will end up as reserves at BOE costing the BOE 3.75% a year, and as the HMT indemnifies any BOE losses surely the cost to HMT is 3.75% a yr and not £0 as the report claims.

People will respond to reports saying that disposable incomes are falling due to tax rises, by asking "are we surprised the government is unpopular" and then 5 mins later look at a story about the govt cutting road projects to fund it's DIP by saying "why doesn't the govt raise taxes instead".

I think fundamentally it is silly to pretend that we have a real plan to generate a reserve corps for NATO. We don’t. And if that is recognised, then an actual focus on the RN, RAF and the High North represents an achievable UK contribution to European Security.

Meet the new toilet monitor, same as the old toilet monitor

Asked about new guidance on single sex spaces, Andy Burnham said: "I think the time has come to take the Supreme Court ruling and the guidance and implement it, but to do it in a way that protects those spaces but does not marginalise already marginalised communities, that's my view.
"My mum and dad brought me up to live and let live. I think Britain needs to get back to a more live and let live' approach to life, not where we're constantly arguing with each other, being judgmental about each other.
"Lets implement the guidance, but to do it in the fairest and most compassionate way possible."
He said he thought Britain had done too much of rerunning arguments. "We've got to stop arguing with each other. We've got to start by finding some common ground and start pulling together," he added.

the 'a wizard did it' theory of transphobia. courts are subordinate to the government. the supreme court massively changed interpretation of the law which has materially made trans people's lives in the UK much worse. the government have allowed this to happen, but pretend it isn't their fault.

Worth noting that Labour's ongoing rescue of the UK steel sector is delivering precisely zero electoral benefit even though it is what everyone claims is popular... hence I suspect a demand for nostalgia which can never be met and forms a political vicious circle.

Until we figure out how France and Italy spend their smaller budgets so much more effectively than us, posturing around spending ‘2/3/5% of GDP’ is very annoying. Treasury bad but MoD also seem spectacularly shit. French military today on 2.1% of GDP is the one we want from 3% in 2035 FFS.

To grow the economy we need more trams, and fewer kebabs
Britain’s second-tier cities are being held back by a simple problem, too many people still cannot get across them quickly enough to reach the jobs, customers and opportunities that drive growth.

Alternate take: Ruthless solicitor took advantage of the dip in prices, caused by council restricting second homes, bought one, then sued the council to overturn the restriction, in order to get quite a bit wealthier. Just saying, this *may* not be the touching underdog story that it is framed as.

A group of villagers who fought to overturn a council's crackdown on second home-ownership say they are "proud" of their "David and Goliath moment".

About 18 months ago, the council of Gwynedd, in north-west Wales, made what it called a "proactive step" to limit the number of second homes in the area.Friends Enlli Angharad Williams and Laura Allis say tourism is important to their local area

Laura Alliss, 38, who lives in Abersoch, said she initially threw away a council notice about Article 4 before she said she realised it affected everyone in Gwynedd.

"I just threw it in the bin because it just said it only affected you if you were a second homeowner, which we weren't," said Laura, although she did later go on to buy a second home, which she now runs as a holiday let.
