“President Xi landed in Washington this week for a state visit that would prove, once and for all, total American dominance. He was greeted at the airport by an old man afraid of Big-Boom-Boom-in-The-Sky, before being taken past a green reflecting swamp, to a half-demolished White House.”

“It's a bold strategy. It forces opponents to make a similarly big offer or they look irrelevant. An offer which I don't think they have the ideological hinterland or intellectual capacity to make. They will end up getting into massive trouble, if they try to match Burnham's policy size and scope.”

Of the many takes and forensic analyses of Andy Burnham's conference speech, this is the best. Fair, genuine, encouraging and inspiring. Everyone should listen.

You know, children, there was a time, not so long ago, when serious journalists - even right wing propagandists cosplaying objectivity - would applaud an experienced, even-tempered Foreign Secretary, like Hague or Hammond, being a bit dry, rather than jumping on stuff as if they were Perez Hilton.

What Newsnight should have taken away was that it shouldn't adopt tabloid narratives unquestioningly and made the appropriate correction. What it did instead was to report the correction as if it were gossip and go "OOOOOH! THEY'RE VERY SENSITIVE!" What? To accuracy? You used to be, too, BBC.

Funny. When Cameron introduced the triple lock I remember everyone on the left understanding very clearly why it was a cynical bribe to Tory voters and would not amount to a hill of beans if public services like social care were cut to the bone. Some of the same comrades are now big fans. 🧐

Not that this will penetrate, but there are serious economic reasons why the triple lock created a ratchet effect that was perverse and economically unsustainable. Sometimes people disagree with you for honest reasons. Not just because you are good and they are wicked. ifs.org.uk/articles/wha...

What do you need to know about the triple lock? | Institute for Fiscal Studies
The triple lock has boosted the level of the state pension over time and it creates high and uncertain costs for the future.

"I left Britain because of Low Traffic Neighbourhoods" said nobody genuinely ever. The Telegraph scours the globe for anyone of notable net worth who recently moved and asking them for a list of pet peeves out of which they pick the one that serves the Telegraph "capital flight" narrative best.

Joe Pike: "I'm here with the only person anyone wants to speak to, Sharon Graham." <Graham bellyaches at length about triple lock> Joe Pike: "So, this gives you a flavour of the debate here." NO IT DOESN'T! You literally only spoke to one person, sought out explicitly because she disagreed. 😂

Here is a sample of Denby's economic expertise: "Bond markets... don't believe in Britain, they think we are too much of a risk, because of our out-of-control spending and our out-of-control taxes and all of those things." I hope the Nobel Economics Prize Committee is paying attention.

Alys Denby, spouting utter guff with huge confidence on Politics Live, like "bringing the review forward by a year is just kicking the can further down the road" and "if you bump into the Laffer curve you get no tax revenue at all", has no economic training I can find, except from Tufton Street.

As a pensioner, I have no problem with the triple lock being removed. Fixing social care is far more important and would benefit pensioners more. When Conservatives scream betrayal, remind them that they suspended it in 2022 when it suited them.

Kuenssberg couldn't sleep last night, imagining how she would spring "Santa Burnham" on the PM. She is crestfallen that he actually has a cogent answer, that is not a version of "it's true, poor people are wicked and must be punished".

Absolutely fascinating to see Laura Kuenssberg interviewing Burnham, flailing to adjust her stance to a politician with a moral argument and a positive message, who stands up for his policies and answers her questions clearly. She is getting so agitated at him not playing the game by the 'rules'.

Just caught up with Friday's gratuitously Labour-Bashing Newsnight. Matt Chorley trying to be Paxman is like those awful circus acts with poodles dressed in tutus, dancing for treats. So thoroughly tragic, that one ends up angry at the man with the clicker who put the poor thing in that position.

Love the legalese bunkum. Apparently, attaching something to someone else's property, without permission, means they can't take it off or it's theft/criminal damage. It would be terrible if someone, who knows where this prick parks, filled his windscreen with RNLI stickers, to test the principle.

Let us not treat "he who wields the knife never wears the crown" as some inviolable rule. Especially, seeing it was coined by someone who failed at both knife-wielding and crown-wearing. Looking at most recent examples, he who wields the knife almost invariably wears the crown.

True, but I think many undestimate just how traumatic Trump is for the GOP right now. The idea they'll just jump into another BDSM affair with some inferior clone is oversold. What remains of the GOP isn't powerless - just not powerful enough to take on Trump. Some people's surrender is strategic.

Surprised there's no mention of Karoline Leavitt re the White House meltdown of last few weeks. A lot of VERY worried insider briefing when she resigned was that KL was one of very few people who could steer DJT away from stuff. Seems worth at least mulling that she was parly holding him together.

There must be SOME ambitious people in the GOP right now thinking: the next round of elections is gone, the only way for Republicans to survive is to publically defenestrate Trump, figuratively speaking, and the person brave enough to do that, will have one hand on the crown for 2032.

What a laughable take. Simply incredible to look at this two-day Trump car crash - including no coverage of state dinner because of press ban and huge "stop the communist Dems" ad campaign launching while Trump rolls our the Red Carpet for The Reds - and have your top takeaway be: Xi Failed A Bit.
BBC screen grab: "Xi got Trump's red carpet welcome - but not everything he wanted". Yeah, sure. Trump failed to entirely accurately hum "Mo Li Hua" while guzzling Xi's ballsack.
