Listening to the Schnittke viola concerto at Usher hall last friday was truly an amazing experience. I can't stop thinking about that piece of music even now.

The UK has autoenrollment and mandatory employer contributions to private pensions something that neither France, Germany or Italy have.

Imo the net result of this £72m is just endless headlines about how Reform staff went on an office Ski trip to the alps or had an office Christmas party at the Ritz . .

New PISA data out England is now top ten in all three areas (reading, maths, science) and the second highest performing country outside of east Asia (after Estonia). This is a huge public policy success.

You'd think the author would be able to look at these stats and instantly know the rest of the article is BS, but clearly not.

Erm this story is about people asking the council for permission to sell them as residential homes not holiday homes and the council refusing to allow this.
000
Dom @fundamentalgroup.bsky.social · 24/08/2026
I suspect the council wants to keep them as holiday homes so it can continue collecting the higher penalty rates of council tax.

I assume he is jsut proposing a cap on the price of UK generated oil and gas. Given that virtually all of the profit goes to the treasury anyways (78%) this would essentially a giant subsidy for consumer gas consumption, due to the foregone tax.

Jantzen filtration | Dan Ciubotaru | 48 comments
AI in Maths, a case study that shook me to my core. On Monday, mostly in jest, I started a GPT 5.6 session, asking it to prove the Jantzen conjecture for affine Hecke algebras. This is a fairly major ...

If this had been policy in the 70s (as it partly was), towns would have produced lots of mining engineers & metallurgists just before pits & steelworks closed. As the yanks say, you should skate to where the puck's going, not to where it is. www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

I know it goes against the new emphasis on “devolution = good”, but I’m quite uncomfortable with the some aspects of the mooted education reforms. New technical education routes for 14+ are a good thing. But I worry that devolving design will disadvantage kids in areas with weaker economies.

You can stop most of this with capital controls but then you will genuinely see large falls in the value of domestic UK land + businesses, since foreign investors are no longer willing to buy them as they can't get their money back out.

Yh people who are subject to the wealth tax will either pay it, switch their assets to exempt asset classes (e.g high end wines or jewelry), emigrate, or sell their assets to fund current consumption. You would probably also expect to see some level of transferring assets to family abroad.

Dom @fundamentalgroup.bsky.social · 24/07/2026
It's not comparative because foreign investors wouldn't be subject to such a tax and so would still be able to yield 8% from that company.

As far as I can tell @neweconomics.bsky.social wants the BOE to create money and lend it to banks at near 0%. As this new money will end up as reserves at BOE costing the BOE 3.75% a year, and as the HMT indemnifies any BOE losses surely the cost to HMT is 3.75% a yr and not £0 as the report claims.

I assume any that would go under would be from the badly run low productivity tail (I mean they must be badly run given they aren't paying tax). Hence even if it caused a short term hit to the economy it would probably increase the long term growth rate.

Tbh IMO the bigger issue than investment was the risk of pharma companies simply not launching new drugs in the UK, to protect their margins in the US (due to the US MFN pricing rules).

Do you know if the companies who were registering as inactive and not filing tax returns were still filing for VAT. It seems odd that the VAT tax gap is falling whilst the small companies tax gap is rising so quickly?

Giving the DIP an extra £10bn wins a lot fewer votes than using than nationalising Thames Water.
000
Dom @fundamentalgroup.bsky.social · 01/07/2026
I don't see why he'd want to chuck it out. If he reopens the DIP he will inevitably need to find even more money, but this way if the DIP is inadequate (which it probably is) then he can just blame that on Starmer and save the cash for non defense spending (i.e things which will win votes).

People will respond to reports saying that disposable incomes are falling due to tax rises, by asking "are we surprised the government is unpopular" and then 5 mins later look at a story about the govt cutting road projects to fund it's DIP by saying "why doesn't the govt raise taxes instead".

Tbh the main effect is that everyone has switched from using the latest Claude opus model available to using cheaper models. I.e I think the main effect of these changes will be to reduce wasteful API calls rather than eliminate usage altogether.

OTOH the number of leave voters voting for a right wing party is actually up due to better consolidation of the leave block by right wing parties than of the remaining block by left wing parties
