What it comes down to is this. If you’re determined a motion on Zionism isn’t seen as antisemitic, you pass this amendment. Obviously. It was instead rejected twice. First in a pre-conference meeting re: all amendments, then by conference members in the hall. This is now what the Green Party is.
Suggested amendment: This motion shall not be used to pressure, proscribe or discipline members based on affiliation with Jewish community institutions, such as Synagogues, community centres or denominational groups, that describe themselves as Zionist, or used to discipline or sanction Jewish members for holding views that would be non sanctionable if expressed by non Jewish members (such as supporting a binational state, or two state solution).

The amendment was rejected.

I just want to say that I know that some trans people on here who joined the Greens because of their LGBT stance decided to leave because of what happened today, & firstly I want to say thank you, I got tearful when I saw that, and secondly, I want to say I'm so sorry you were put in this position.

You realise we all saw how an amendment specifically designed to remove the targeting of Jewish Green Party members for Synagogue attendance was rejected, right? These "assurances" are as worthless as your "solidarity".

Something I repeatedly find with far left politicians is that they seem to think that if they say the magic words "antisemitism has no place in our society" this frees them from doing anything tangible about the antisemitism right in front of their sanctimonious fucking faces.

I understand that given the passing of this motion, leaders of local authorities run by the Greens, as well as Green MPs, will be contacted and asked these questions. I imagine most will not have the courage to answer.

In the wake of the “Zionism is Racism” UN motion spearheaded by the Soviet Bloc & Arab League in 1975 (repealed in 1990), there was a concentrated campaign at universities around the UK to ban Jewish societies. Not Israel societies. Jewish societies. We know where stuff like this leads.

Green Party conference just voted in favour of this motion, and this time, in the hall itself, specifically voted against an amendment which would have removed the element about “Zionist Synagogues”. As a result, for most Jews the Green Party will now be considered to have a policy of antisemitism.

Conservatives: We should do our own version of the Bayeux Tapestry, which made our country what it is today. Onlooker: You mean a tapestry which, at its most basic, depicts a bunch of people coming over from France in small boats and taking over the country? Conservatives: Wait a minute

Oh NOW I remember why Groypers hate the Talmud so much
Apropos the discussion of the obligation to allow oneself to be killed rather than engage in forbidden sexual intercourse, the Gemara notes that Rav Yehuda says that Rav says: There was an incident involving a certain man who set his eyes upon a certain woman and passion rose in his heart, to the point that he became deathly ill. And they came and asked doctors what was to be done with him. And the doctors said: He will have no cure until she engages in sexual intercourse with him. The Sages said: Let him die, and she may not engage in sexual intercourse with him. The doctors said: She should at least stand naked before him. The Sages said: Let him die, and she may not stand naked before him. The doctors suggested: The woman should at least converse with him behind a fence in a secluded area, so that he should derive a small amount of pleasure from the encounter. The Sages insisted: Let him die, and she may not converse with him behind a fence.

My favourite bit of the NYT article was this:
A Rabbi told Anthropic that he personally didn't believe that they were creating conscious beings, but that if Anthropic truly believed they were, then by that definition they were creating slaves, which would obviously be an extremely bad thing

ICYMI, Andy Burnham rather foolishly weighed in on the Manchester City situation, Number 10 then felt moved to issue a *clarification* of his comments, and then had to an issue a clarification of the clarification when they realised they’d managed to make things worse. Ouch.

Apologies for resurrecting discourse, but I was thinking back on how some shows have completely vanished from the public consciousness. Case in point, in the 2000s, "24" was one of the biggest shows on the planet. "Prison Break" was huge. I can't even recall a mention of them in the last decade.

Unlike Liz Truss, Andy Burnham clearly believes that time is on his side. ✍️ www.linestotake.com/p/hope-defer...
Pensions triple lock, social care, electoral reform, Brexit — if there was a third rail of British politics, Andy Burnham intended to step on it. At the same time, there was a curious asymmetry with regards to how fast he was prepared to go.

The triple lock won’t be scrapped reformed until 2030, social care is for the next parliament, the voting system to be determined by committee, the EU gets more talks about talks. Contrast this with Liz Truss, who had similar ambitions to rewire the country, in her case by cutting taxes and rolling back regulation. But she wanted to do it at break-neck speed, which was ultimately her downfall.

For Truss, haste was a product not simply of impatience but of her own insecurity. She needed to create facts on the ground before her limited political authority (little support from MPs, even less in the country) evaporated. She was there for a good time, not a long time. Burnham appears more confident that time is on his side.

Apart from whether or not they should do it, I find it fairly ironic that the government is now saying imposing sanctions on Israel could help Netanyahu's re-election bid, something which 2 weeks ago they were furiously briefing was utterly ludicrous to suggest. www.jewishnews.co.uk/uk-and-allie...
But sources have confirmed to Jewish News a central consideration for the UK is to ensure that any possible retaliatory action does not hand Netanyahu a “propaganda coup” just weeks before the Israeli elections on October 27.

By setting the eviction date so close to the Israeli elections, there is clear potential for Netanyahu to exploit any confrontation with the UK government for electoral advantage.

This factor now dominates UK thinking as it weighs its own retaliatory measures.
