![This burgeoning neo-Bundism partly explains the aforementioned surge in enthusiasm for Yiddish, an enthusiasm especially notable in certain millennial or Gen Z circles, which is not the demographic typically associated with an interest in Yiddish. In the classes I’ve taken with the Committee for Yiddish in Toronto, I have noticed a surprising number of younger participants, including some non-Jews and BIPOC folks. In Philadelphia, language and culture groups with names such as Philly Yid and Shtetl Philly, have recently sprung up; some (not all) of the twenty- and thirty-something members of these groups link their interest in Yiddish to an antipathy towards Israel and by extension towards Hebrew. Philadelphia folk musician Jack Braunstein is quoted as saying “I think there’s an element that’s about saying ‘no’ to the actions of these [Israeli] illegal settlements, apartheid and what leading human rights groups . . . have described to be a genocide.” Braunstein and other members of the featured groups have not failed to connect the dots between Yiddish and Bundism.
