I know this is a really uncomfortable convo to have, but we can't keep pretending that justice in this country is colour-blind. Tell me with a straight face that Arthur Finegan would have received the sympathy of the court if he Maori/Pasifika and had brutally assaulted a whitefella. #nzpol

What I didn't expect to see at the Cartier exhibition at the NGV in Melbourne was a clock shaped like a torii gate. @kaitlynugoretz.bsky.social
Front view of clock shaped liked a torii, with a figure (Buddha?? monk??) on top. Made in 1923 for a Polish opera singer, featuring diamonds, rock crystal, onyx, enamel, coral, gold, platinum.Back view of the clock.

There's a reason one of the first things Elon Musk's DOGE did was slash archives funding and staff. In NZ's case, I'm not going to attribute to malice what can be attributed to short-sighted cost-cutting and managerialism, but the end result is the same: less transparent, accountable government.

If you care about governments being held accountable, then you need to know about disastrous cuts being planned for Archives NZ and the National Library. These cuts don't just make it much harder to do history. They undermine the institutions at the heart of our democracy.

Andrea Vance on Paul Henry's candidacy in the Sunday Star-Times. No notes from me. #NZpol
This is the generation of ageing elites who spend their golden years complaining about a broken world they actively helped construct, while simultaneously insisting that only they possess the unique wisdom required to fix it.When you strip away Henry's celebrity charm, his vision is just a monologue delivered to a public he doesn't even want to share a bus seat with.
Still, we give Henry a pass because he used to read the weather headlines.
I can be dismissed as the humourless columnist who wandered into the circus tent and started complaining about the clowns.
Maybe. But the problem isn't that Paul Henry is funny. He is disarmingly so.
It's that we've become so thoroughly convinced politics is broken and that nobody is really fixing anything, so we might as well enjoy the show while the whole thing burns down.
Clacton gets Count Binface. At least everyone knows he's wearing a costume.
But sure, maybe it's fine. Electing a ratings-busting TV celebrity who built his brand on gold-plated excess, crude remarks, and racial provocations - what could possibly go wrong?
