Just through helping a friend who got scammed trying to buy a rubbish bin. The site she got caught by, brabantia-nz[dot]com, is the top Google result for the term "Brabantia NZ". One of a large cluster of scam sites, most seem to use vvservicecare[dot]com as the order confirmation email address

Also just go walking along the main shopping street while you're in Ginza and look at the window displays. Dior is generally amazing, and many other shops are too.

Pay extra for the tea house there. Definitely a worthwhile experience!

Near the Nezu Museum is the Taro Okamoto Memorial Museum. It was his house and studio so, although it's small, it's an interesting insight into his life and work.

On the other side of Minato City, the Nezu Museum is lovely. There are some stunning objects in the collection, the building was designed by Kengo Kuma, and its surrounded by a Japanese garden. The gift shop is excellent too.

The Ad Museum near Shimbashi station has interesting and varied exhibitions of Japanese advertising material over the years. I like taking the Yurikamome line from Shimbashi station, making sure to get the front seat. Its a driverless train so there are great views going over Tokyo Bay.

Minato City covers quite a large area, so here are a few suggestions. Hamarikyu garden is on the tourist map but totally worth seeing for the view of skyscrapers behind a classic Japanese garden. Zojoji temple with Tokyo Tower behind is also a great view. Its treasure gallery has beautiful scrolls.

Shibu Onsen is a picturesque little town and the shrine hike is a great idea. Another option is Obuse, which is on the train line between Nagano and Yudanaka. Hokusai spent some time working there, and there is a museum with a lot of his work.

In Kanazawa, I highly recommend Ochaya Shima Geisha House which is now a museum. Worth paying extra for tea and a sweet, and contemplate the garden. Are you going to see the snow monkeys in Yamanouchi? If so, be sure to check the website before you go. Sometimes they disappear into the hills!

What area of Tokyo are you staying in? I could give some local recommendations depending on where you are.

Impossible to invent something as absurd as the Minister for Cracking Down On Truancy And School Lunches not knowing it is the school holidays www.rnz.co.nz/news/politic...
Oct 6, 2026 2:56 PM
RNZ Live
'Why are you not in school?' It’s school holidays

David Seymour stopped to speak to some children at Velocity Valley in Rotorua, giving them a piece of advice.

“Don’t trust politicians,” he said. “Are you a politician?,” they questioned.

After the three children asked if he was going to be on the news and waved at the cameras, he said: “hey, one question, how come you guys aren’t at school?”

It’s school holidays, they said.

Seymour said they could still go into school, but the kids didn’t seemed thrilled by that idea.

“No, it’s ok,” they said before walking away.

Two NZ pedestrians crossing tracks in front of a speeding train are nearly struck by a train labelled 'Climate Crisis'.

Same on NZH's Facebook page. Obviously unfamiliar with the area and the train line.

I was using the pedestrian crossing at the time and what happened is a common scenario. A train goes through and the barriers remain down because there is another train about to come in the other direction. An impatient motorist assumes the barriers are faulty and decides to go through.

Denise @denisest.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
I was waiting for the pedestrian gate to open, and the blast of the train's horn was very loud! So startled I didn't spot the car.

No. Even if he manages to stay in the army, he won't be staying in the intelligence section.

Denise @denisest.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
That's far too coherent and grammatically correct 😀

Denise @denisest.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
He's not an officer, just a Private. I suspect the label "intelligence officer" is just part of the window dressing to make him appear respectable.

I once worked in a job that required clearance to Top Secret level, where even the youngest, most junior staff were vetted. Trustworthiness was the biggest thing they looked at, with my referees being asked about associations, drinking habits, financial problems, anything blackmailable really.

Denise @denisest.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
Absolutely. My view is that he is not suitable for an army career.
120
Denise @denisest.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
Although the story describes him as an "intelligence officer", it also says he'd only completed basic training and didn't have a "foothold" in his career, so I read that as still being an ordinary grunt. He clearly had loftier aspirations though.

I know this is a really uncomfortable convo to have, but we can't keep pretending that justice in this country is colour-blind. Tell me with a straight face that Arthur Finegan would have received the sympathy of the court if he Maori/Pasifika and had brutally assaulted a whitefella. #nzpol

Even a filing clerk or administrator will need that clearance if they are working in an area where they might come into contact with highly classified documents. It doesn't mean that they are doing any advanced or specialised work.

Denise @denisest.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
He is quite clearly not fit for an army career, and I don't understand why people were so ready to protect this for him. Too bad that he doesn't have a plan B, but he's young enough to sort out a different field of work.
