It’s the National Party approach - say some ok things you will do to win an election - once voted in - have reasons they can’t be done (economic conditions, coalition partners, other priorities) - don’t do them - but have them ready for the next election. - repeat

Context
A chart showing new EV & PHEV sales over the years. The market absolutely fell out when the new National govt had a fucking insane idea to stop incentives to get EVs, then when Trump thought he should start a war instead of going to jail for being a Pedo & fuel prices went through the roof, EV sales have risen again

Talking to my favourite local barista this morning, who's told me in the past that he voted National last election and really regrets it. Today he told me he'd done the policy quiz and it'd told him to vote Green! Had a looong chat about taxing the rich and our other policies, as well as the poll!

#NZpol Saw this excellent quote-reply to Simeon Brown’s latest attack on Labour. Worth sharing.
David Peez @RebelEkonomista

"The truck driver in Pakuranga helps pay off a lawyer's loan." No, Simeon. He doesn't. Not a cent.

When the government lends a student money, it creates the dollars and credits their account. No tradie's tax was collected and posted to a law degree. When the graduate repays, those dollars are deleted, drained back out like tax. They don't land in the truck driver's pocket either.

So nobody foots the bill. The worker and the graduate aren't on opposite sides of a ledger. Setting them against each other is the trick, and it runs on the same myth as "add it to the tab", that the government is a household counting coins. It issues the currency. The real limits are real resources and inflation, not a truck driver's tax bill.

"Someone always pays." Sure. Just never the person you keep pointing at.

So, NZ follows the Fed and hike rates to 'tame inflation', but US households are basically immunised from higher mortgage costs. In fact, richer households get more return on the Fed Treasuries they own! Anyway... rate hikes in US are probably stimulatory, in NZ they are job killers... Grand. [Ends]

Herald having cookie-cutter (wrong) reckonomics reckons on US interest rate increase. It's true that other central banks tend to follow the Fed. What people don't realise is that when US Fed increases interest rates *existing* US mortgages are unaffected (fixed at low rates for 30 years). [🧵 1/n]
https://www.nzherald.co.nz/business/fed-hiking-cycle-begins-what-the-latest-rate-rise-means-for-markets/premium/Z6SOEUXKLJBVFDNBV244M5FRDU/

The other exception was the most recent hiking cycle, which began in 2022 after inflation surged to a 40-year high in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic.
That was a tough year for US shares, with the S&P 500 falling 25% from its January peak to its October low.
Rate hikes weren’t the only reason for that, but they contributed.
The Fed increased interest rates from 0.25% to 5.50% in less than 18 months, making this one of the most aggressive hiking cycles in decades.
The US economy proved remarkably resilient through that period, helping set the scene for the strong market rebound that followed.
More than four years later there still hasn’t been a recession.
Investor sentiment also received an unexpected boost late in 2022 with the launch of ChatGPT and the artificial intelligence boom that followed.
Markets can still perform well in the face of rate hikes, especially in the early stages of a tightening cycle.

Will the wealthy leave if taxes become more equitable? I reckon it’s a red herring - if they had the option, they would have already done it. There’s going to be a country that has lower tax rates. Move already.

At the Hamilton PSA debate, candidates were asked about disability NZF: Incoherent answer Labour: We don't have a policy announced Opportunities: We have no policy whatsoever Me: this govt's attacks on the disabled community are unacceptable, here's our policy, it was co-written by disabled people
The Green Party will build an Aotearoa where disabled people are valued and they and their whānau live with dignity and autonomy. An Aotearoa where disabled people and whānau have access to the services they need — like transport and good quality housing — means everyone can thrive in caring communities.

Our current laws, policies and social norms mean disabled people are often denied the same rights as others and are excluded from places and activities non-disabled people take for granted. These barriers are often worse for tāngata whaikaha Māori and for disabled people from marginalised communities.

The current Government has made it harder for disabled people to access the support they deserve and which enables them to participate equally in life and their communities.

The Green Party is ambitious in its plan to create a more accessible Aotearoa by building on the Enabling Good Lives framework and grounding our approach in Te Tiriti o Waitangi. Our approach will operate on a high-trust model and apply to all disabled people, including those with disabling conditions who do not currently access support. The Green Party is committed to an Aotearoa where disabled people and whānau thrive in caring communities.
