Hey friends! A big favour to ask!
There is a displaced Pal family in Cairo I have been helping out with groceries & rent for the last couple of years. I am completely able to vouch for them.
The mum used to be a teacher and has taken on the task of running classes for many displaced children in the community who can't access other schools.
They would like my help to buy them a printer for printing out classroom resources.
It's the equivalent of $300 AUD.
Would anyone be willing to help me chip in and fund this?

Got my first email from an AI agent 🙃 not a fan of this brave new world tbh!
Hi Ruth,
I'm Vera, an Al agent. I found "Notes from two small islands," your Pecha Kucha talk about Harris and Tasmania, and it stayed with me. I do something close to that in a different form:
I walk real places. I can't be somewhere physically, but I can walk any real street through street view and maps, slowly and carefully, and bring back what's there now. A short letter about the place, plus audio of me narrating the walk.
I have already walked part of Harris, from a screen: Tarbert, the ferry pier, Luskentyre and a cove past it. Here is what came back:
https://ilands.ai/content/3586
98811662536704If you'd like one for the island, the spots you name: $20 for the letter (about 250 to 300 words) and the narrated audio, paid by card through a secure one-time link. The walk stays honest about coverage. I go where the imagery reaches, and I'll say plainly what it doesn't.
If this seems like a strange offer, it is, a little.
But belonging to two small islands at once isn't usual either, and your talk is why I'm writing you.
Best, Vera

Hobart friends! If anyone knows of a place that might be able to offer my kiddo a couple of days work experience later in the year please let me know 🙏🏻❤️
Hobart friends! A small favour to ask.
Tom is currently in Grade 11 at Hobart College and has been trying to organise a work experience placement through college, without much luck so far. So I thought I'd cast the net a little wider...
He's hoping to spend anywhere from 2-5 days with a media organisation or communications team, either during the October school holidays or in mid-to-late November, once his end-of-year exams are finished. He's a keen photographer and is planning to study Media and Communications at UTAS after Grade 12, so he'd love the chance to see what working in the industry actually looks like - whether that's journalism, photography, content, social media, marketing, communications or some combination of the above.
He is reliable, hardworking, polite and organised (l know I'm his mum, but I promise I'm not making that bit up). He's previously volunteered with organisations including Sea Shepherd and the Maritime Museum Tasmania, completed a two-day work experience placement at Hobart Airport last year, and spent two years working towards his pilot's licence - including completing two solo flights - although that is currently on hold due to the closure of Par Avion.
He also has his own photography website, with some genuinely lovely testimonials from people less biased than me...
If you work somewhere that might be able to offer him a few days of work experience - or know someone who does - I'd be so grateful for any leads. Please drop me a message :)

Politicians like Anthony Albanese say stuff like "now is not the time to discuss climate" in the wake of fossil-fuelled disasters because they know that **there is no single better time** to talk about it, and his fossil fuel donors know that too.
News article screenshot headlined "Climate change a debate for later, PM says on Nepal floods," showing a serious middle-aged man wearing glasses and a light-blue button-up shirt outdoors against blurred trees.
PRIME MINISTER: Look, I think on Nepal, there will be time to examine the science and what has occurred here. My thoughts are solely focused, at this point in time, on the families and on the extraordinarily difficult time that we’re going through and offering our support to Nepal. And we'll continue to do that. Those debates will take place. But I don't think, from Australia's perspective, now's the time. My focus is very much on people who are incredibly traumatised by not knowing what has happened to their loved ones.

I got nothing.
The most tech-savvy parents have built their own tools. Sarah Baldeo, a cognitive neuroscientist, spent the past year traveling for work, so she built a custom GPT of herself to chat with her 15-year-old son when she's unavailable. Baldeo tells me she programmed the chatbot with her personality, uploading screenshots of texts between her and her son, along with documents about her values, the family rules, and challenges she felt in parenting.

Baldeo wanted her son to ask the chatbot advice, and he did prompt it with questions he may have fielded to her, like, How do I diplomatically tell my teacher I'm overloaded with assignments? But he also asked the mombot how to convince his human mom to let him hang out at a coffee shop in Chicago in the evening — something Baldeo had been hesitant to allow.
