It's fucking hilarious watching US political pundit straining to make a "poll-driven complacency" midterms narrative happen about the Democratic Party whose default response to good news is to fling itself off the nearest cliff like a meth-addled lemming.

Even by the standards of American legacy media, it takes some brass to gaslight a Democratic candidate literally to their faces that they're being complacent, after they've spelled how how they're running in deep purple races with a history of being decided by fractions of a point.

a meme - looks like a public service announcement about the safety features and hazards on a plane or train. “How to avoid sexual assault
A QUICK AND EASY GUIDE*
2
3
DON'T PUT DRUGS IN PEOPLE'S DRINKS.
USE THE BUDDY SYSTEM.
If you might sexually assault someone, bring a friend to stop you.
IF SOMEONE IS DRUNK, HIGH, OR ASLEEP, DON'T RAPE THEM.
5
6
CARRY A WHISTLE.
If you might sexually assault someone, blow it until someone stops you.
8
WATCH WHAT YOU WEAR.
If someone's clothes are a problem for you, try wearing a blindfold.
WHEN YOU SEE
SOMEONE WALKING ALONE, LEAVE THEM ALONE.
DON'T FEEL
ENTITLED TO SEX.
Nobody owes you sex.
Flirting isn't consent.
IF YOU'RE ALONE WITH SOMEONE, DON'T SEXUALLY ASSAULT THEM.
THE ONLY PERSON RESPONSIBLE FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT IS THE PERSON WHO COMMITS IT.”

I really wish I lived in a world where it isn't so damn refreshing - and more than a little shocking - to see front-loading of the idea that men have absolute, unqualified agency over, and responsibility for, their own sexual (mis)conduct.

Anyone shocked that TX state senator Angela Paxton gritted her teeth and endorsed her scumbag estranged husband for Senate should keep in mind that "no enemies to the right" is the first and only rule of Republican Electoral Fight Club. The second: "Shady bitches get stitches."

Call me terribly old fashioned, but you'd think an organization that (in its own words) "stands at the intersection of literature and human rights to protect free expression in the United States and worldwide" would be clear on the difference between fact and fiction. Silly me, I guess.

My husband worked in rail for over fifty years. I'm a heavy public transport user (including trains) because I can't pass the vision test to get a license. Certainly don't have the spare cash for taxis etc. So, no Prime Minister. Also: Fuck off and fuck your patronizing self.

I try to avoid getting nostalgic about the not-so-good-for-too-many old days in Hollywood (or anywhere else) but at least the exploitative bigots who used to run the studios weren't quite so nakedly contemptuous of moving pictures and everyone who made them.

Here's the cold ugly truth: The only way the "campus sexual assault crisis" is going to even be slowed is when frat house rapists cost the Cornells of this world real money. I mean, it worked when elite donors loudly threatened to stop their cheques over pro-Palestine protests, didn't it?

They quoted me in this New Yorker piece about AI today. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
“Let’s say there’s a world or time line I exist in where A.I. has been subject to regulation. It is ethical. It has no footprint environmentally,” the novelist Jeff VanderMeer, a prominent critic of A.I., told me over the phone. “With those guardrails in place, would I read an A.I. book? All I can say is no. And the reason is, in part, because I want to read something coming from a particular mind.” Using A.I., he said, “feels like a betrayal of the whole point of why you’re a writer.”
