Contrast Woodend & Mill Rd super expensive mega road projects: Woodend is the conventional + welcome highway bypass of a town, Mill Rd is the bonkers highway bypass of a highway THROUGH a town!? Urban SH1 is failing so let's duplicate it thru where people live, + generate even more traffic onto it 🤷‍♀️

With City Rail Link (CRL) now open & wonderful, it's worth remembering how basic Auckland's rail system was in 2009. These photos show Otāhuhu; a tiny halt served by rattling diesels. Rail-wise it took real vision to move things up to where they are today. Video below 👇 youtu.be/RvOBLLv71-w?...

"Let's not get too hung up on if City Rail Link is an overnight succ– <touches earpiece> ...and, in news just to hand: City Rail Link appears to be an overnight success, with an estimated 72,500 boardings on the train network as of 5pm today. That's 25,000 more than by the same time last Monday."
Part one of a media release from Auckland Transport and KiwiRail, headlined: "Tens of thousands of Aucklanders embrace CRL on its first Monday of operation"

The first weekday commute using City Rail Link (CRL) services has proven to be a game changer for how Aucklanders get around their city.

As of 5pm this evening, an estimated 72,500 boardings were counted on trains across the network, which is 25,000 more boardings than were recorded on the train network by the same time last Monday.

“What we’ve seen today is not only a busy morning peak period with customers heading into work, school or university, but numbers have stayed strong throughout the rest of the morning and afternoon too,” says Stacey van der Putten, AT Chief Executive.Part two of the media release: “This shows Aucklanders are getting out there and exploring the new routes that CRL offers, and it’s a fantastic new way for people to visit parts of the city they may not have had easy access to in the past.

“Our ambassador staff have been supporting customers at Karanga-a-Hape and Maungawhau stations throughout the day to transfer from the East-West to the South-City or Onehunga-West lines. These transfers will become second nature to Aucklanders in the weeks to come.”

AT partners Auckland One Rail have released some key statistics. It says a total of 84 trains are in service today operated by 200 drivers and supported by 150 train managers.

Over 100 customer service staff and ambassadors have been at stations helping people with travel and transfer information, and more than 100 security staff have also been present.
