A word at the end of the day about people saying "I'm okay with drug testing if all MPs have to do it". No. That is *not* where we want to go. Part of the danger of National's stunt policy is that it sets us off down a slippery slope where the privacy and human rights of *everyone* are infringed.

Imho It’s worth noting alongside this that a significant proportion of homeless young people (who may of course become homeless older people) have been rejected by their families for being queer. We won’t end homelessness without ending the v prejudices Peters is fomenting with this hate & nonsense.

Also undermines the extensive public involvement in council processes, if central govt can just come in and decide to get rid of rules that were introduced through a public plan change process 🙃

We are at the stage of the general election campaign when many Just Want To Know the outcome. I get it; this is the 30th election I've been v invested in, across AUSA, central govt, by-elections and local govt. It's hard. We try to read the entrails and forecast. But we actually cannot Know.

How many sector/issue based election forums have National and ACT missed now? I note they are also sending pretty junior folks to the ones that are likely to be critical, when they do attend. Pretty disappointing.

And that reveals the other concerning aspect: here the tribunal’s power is advice-giving and dialogical. Why would a govt and Parliament not want the benefit of advice from an expert body and one that has deep-dived evidentially into a particular policy or law?

Looking through some old stuff and found this cartoon I cut out c1996. They just never really have new ideas, just new packaging. (For younger readers - right wing think tank the NZ Initiative formed out of a merger of the NZ Business Roundtable and the NZ Institute in 2012.)
Photo of a black and white cartoon with a bunch of men sitting around an executive board table. A sign in front reads “Quiet please, Roundtable in session”. From left to right they are saying:
“The govt should get out of education and health…”
“We need more contestability in social welfare…”
“the govt should sell ACC and the post office…”
“We should privatise electricity and roading…”
“Seen the polls? Winston could be the next PM”
“That’s disgraceful. What happened to the New Zealand we all knew and loved?”

I’m reminded of Key singling out McGehan Close in his 2007 “underclass” speech & all that followed. Clark was PM & her seat was called Owairaka from ‘96-99. My theory was Key’s team picked that street cos it was in Ōwairaka. But by ‘07 the suburb wasn’t in her seat; it was in Goff’s Mt Roskill.

In person election debates are where liars think they are most likely to get away with lies. Thank you to everyone who shares this stuff so we can all see. It’s exhausting often to do (I’ve done it). Democracy is more than voting every so often. And media no longer do this stuff.

Fun new lie about me out there this weekend. Can confirm I had no involvement in deciding electorate boundaries for Mt Roskill; big changes that on paper make it _harder_ for the Labour candidate (my husband) to win it. Assume the lying reflects Nats getting bad feedback in the new bits 🤷🏻‍♀️

Cartoon. Title: “The Campaign” Image show Act leader David Seymour talking to the media, with a Waitangi Tribunal document under his arm. He is saying, “Activist! Ideological! Expansive! And an affront to every New Zealander!” In the background PM Luxon is walking away, and looking back nervously, saying, “Gawd! What’s he talking about now?” And Nicola Willis is saying, “The Act Party”
