First, BASIRA is a great project (I'm on the board of advisors, so I'm not impartial). Second, here's an example of a manuscript that survives in its original chemise binding. It's a 15th-century copy of the Nova Statuta from England, a book containing parliamentary statutes.

The shelfmark is: The National Archives E 164/10. In this photo, the manuscript is open to a page with a decorative floral border beginning a new section of the statutes. The chemise binding is now greyish brown, and the original clasps that would have held the book shut are visible, attached to one edge of the binding.

The problem with being an experienced sewist is that there are only so many shortcuts your pride will allow you to take. So I used the selvedges to avoid finishing the seams, and the waistband has no interfacing and is topstitched, the gathers aren’t perfectly spaced… but I’m hand hemming it.
