Literally every single instance when the time "2:30" is mentioned I am forced against my will to say "oh I have a dentist's appointment then."

I continue to think that Hegseth and the entire Trump Administration's central problem is that they face every single problem like they're Charles Bronson in Death Wish. Everybody but me is weak and ineffectual and only my machismo and divine wrath can save the day. Boxer Rebellion shit.

I am absolutely opposed to the death penalty in every way. But if it has to exist, I believe that it should always be done by a firing squad made up of the jurors who decided that the convicted deserved the death penalty.

If anyone knows a lawyer in the Boston area who might be looking for work, is willing to try litigation, and doesn’t mind the absolute lack of prestige and barely adequate compensation of what I do, please send them my way.

I've been thinking about this a lot recently, because my grandfather's family changed their Lithuanian surname upon immigrating to the US during WWI, and that family is the only one on the planet with that surname. In my kids' generation, two baby girls are the only ones with that surname.

I would be curious to ask Beck what the name, platform, or accomplishments of the most recent city council member he voted for are.

Apparently Schmid is unfamiliar with the concept of econometrics, which can pretty easily provide the answer to this question.

My incredibly not-online wife first heard about this story last night, and when I explained it to her she literally didn't believe me that Cornell would be so lackadaisical in response to such a horrific incident. And my wife is a therapist, LCSW, who regularly works with sexual assault survivors.

This is technically correct, in that if you have dollar-denominated debt at a fixed interest rate inflation will lower the real value of that debt, but it's an incredibly stupid way to think about inflation.

20 years ago I could have said "Pete Crow-Armstrong is gonna be the next Pete Reiser" and made a billion old Dodger fans cry, but sadly they've all died off by now. Just the mention of Reiser's name was enough to bring wailing and gnashing of teeth and "HE WAS BETTER THAN DiMAGGIO!" Tears in rain.

I'm morally opposed to the death penalty in all cases. I cannot understand what the purpose of executing this woman is. What does it serve? Why?

Even if you support the death penalty the United States is not currently capable of doing it in a way that passes for “humane” Humans are being treated far worse than animals.

When I was ~22 I missed the last train at Penn Station at 1:40 a.m. and the next one wasn't for like 2 1/2 hours, so I sat on the ground against a pillar to wait for it. I must have dozed off; I woke to my rib breaking as a cop kicked me to move along. There's one part of this story I've left...

A U.S. Army psychologist Gustave M. Gilbert interviewed Nazi war criminals on trial at Nuremberg and famously wrote in his 1950 book, "Evil, I think, is the absence of empathy." It was the *lack* of empathy that made the Holocaust possible.

U.S. Army psychologist noting all the Nuremberg war criminals lacked empathy.

This is called price inelasticity, and the usual example given for it is life-saving cancer medication: people won't stop buying it until you've raised the price high enough that they accept dying as an alternative to paying for it.

I pay for a ChatGPT subscription. I have tried engaging in chats with ChatGPT. They are not interesting. They do not provide information I couldn't otherwise get with a simply google search. I tried giving the thing instructions to have a personality; it does not work. I do not understand the draw.

I built my computer in March 2025 out of concerns that Trump's tariffs would send prices spiralling. Instead, AI sent prices spiralling. Prices I paid then vs. what I'd have to pay now: 64 GB RAM: $140 / $1,000 Five 2-TB M2 SSD's: $600 / $1,950 (My GPU, an RTX 5070 Ti, was $900; now it's $1,230)

The rude part of this is that they waited to score them until Cam Schlittler had already thrown 117 pitches. Thankfully, if the Yankees win this series his next start will either be on 5 days rest or 7 days rest (if the Yankees win tonight).

Oracle's market cap is greater than, to name a few, Bank of America; HSBC; Chevron; GE; United Health; Morgan Stanley; etc. In inflation adjusted terms its market cap is 75% bigger than AIG's peak in 2007. 4 times as big as Lehman's peak market cap (although Lehman's failure hurt for other reasons)

I was not in a fraternity at Cornell. In my experience, there were two types of people who joined fraternities at Cornell: rich kids whose fathers had been in the same fraternity at the same school, and people without social skills who sought a built-in friend group. Both populations are kinda rapy
