He'd gone to the Helm & Cloak tavern for a drink after a miserable day on the magistrate's bench. The main case had been three hunters brought up for poaching deer from a noble estate. It was an open-and-shut case. The poachers had freely admitted it, saying that there were plenty of deer, and the nobles obviously weren't using them, so what was the harm? Their legal counsel had first tried frantically to shush them, then tried to argue that they were speaking in the abstract, then finally sat with her head in her hands, her shoulders slumped in de-spair.
The penalty for poaching was death. Specifically, hanging.

I know this pleases everyone's priors, but you'll notice that there's no sourcing and it actually contradicts internal policy documents. Recruitment bonuses aren't paid by ICE until after the completion of a probationary period. You can't be forced to repay money you don't have yet.

An employing office will delay the starting date of a service agreement until after an employee completes an initial period of formal training or required probationary period when continued employment in the position is contingent on successful completion of the formal training or probationary period. While the employing office must make the determination to pay a recruitment bonus before the employee enters on duty, the service agreement must specify that if the employee does not successfully complete the training or probationary period before the service period begins, then the employing office is not obligated to pay any portion of the recruitment bonus to the employee.

Good opportunity to remind people of a similar case right here in my backyard from last October. This survived an attempt to dismiss on 1st Amendment grounds and he ultimately pled out. Judge gave a six-month prison sentence, which was a substantial deviation from the 24-30 guideline recommendation.

So SSA's ALJ's are trying a new trick when it comes to denying jobs. They'll ignore their own psychological experts' opinions limiting someone to performing jobs which only involve 1-2 step tasks, finding that such a limitation "is not vocationally defined." That's such a load of bullshit.

In light of the DC Circuit blocking almost all of the injunction in the Associated Press' case from last year, it's not at all clear that this is a First Amendment violation. Yes, he can't keep them out of the East Room, but he can essentially everywhere else.

OK, I've already seen some Lawrence of Arabias so I won't chime in further there, but I think some of the set piece moments in The Duelists deserve a mention.
