Oh wow In May, I reported Alberta separatists were using an app developed by GOP operatives with ties to US ambassador Pete Hoekstra @theglobeandmail.com now reports the same operatives flew to Calgary on a private jet for a secret meeting with separatist leaders: pressprogress.ca/alberta-sepa...
The pitch began with a prayer.
On an afternoon in late January, Mitch Sylvestre, the leader of Alberta's most prominent separatist organization, gathered with three of his lieutenants in a boardroom not far from the executive hangars at the Calgary International Airport, where private jets shuttle in and out of the city away from prying eyes.
It was a few hours before thousands of Albertans would gather near the city centre at a rally to launch the separatist campaign. But this meeting, convened behind closed doors a half-hour drive away, was invite only.
The Alberta Prosperity Project chose the location to accommodate its guests, Republican political strategists from Michigan who helped Donald Trump win the state in the 2024 U.S. presidential election.
The American delegation travelled to Calgary to sell them on software developed for Republicans to get out the vote - and how it could be used to wrench Alberta from Confederation.
"They were young Christians. Capable, intelligent people," Mr. Sylvestre said. "We prayed before we started the meeting.""There is no secrecy'
One of the key figures behind the Michigan software company has expressed strong views on Alberta.
On July 1, Mr. Born wrote on social media: "On this Canada Day, I hope this is the last year Alberta is part of Canada." He has also called for U.S. annexation of the province.
A hunter, outdoorsman and commercial real estate agent in Grand Rapids, Mr. Born is the stepson of J.C. Huizenga, a wealthy Republican donor and founder of National Heritage Academies, a network of conservative charter schools in the U.S.
Mr. Wierda is the nephew of Erik Prince, who founded and ran the private military contractor Blackwater before it was sold to investors in 2010, and Betsy DeVos, the education secretary during Mr. Trump's first term.

Comic I drew back in January... www.noncanon.com/comics/2026-...
PANEL 1: A duck and a dog are listening to music. DUCK: "Whoa! Is this a demo or alternate cut of this song I know well?" DOG: "Nope! Just my LP PAL!"

PANEL 2: The record player and receiver with an inobtrusive smiling box wired to it. DUCK (off panel): "HELPY PAL?" DOG (off panel): "No, LP PAL--it's the fun and friendly box that sits between my stereo and speakers!"

PANEL 3: Diagram of the line out flowing through the LP PAL then to audio out. DOG (off panel): "As it receives any audio input, it processes it using an A.I. trained on all recorded music ever, then it produces new verses, new solos, sometimes whole new tracks--all optimized to human engagement metrics!"

PANEL 4: We return to our duck and dog. DOG: "So now EVERY album is an ACTUAL WORLD OF SOUND!" DOG: "It's an experience of reality that I pay a machine to mediate FOR me. So I can get back to doing WHAT REALLY MATTERS!"

I found a trail heading off into the woods along the way we used to walk by the river together that I had never noticed before and followed it for a while uphill into a clearing where I came across a remarkable dead tree.
An act of God
I found a trail heading off into the woods along the way we used to walk by the river together that I had never noticed before and followed it for a while uphill into a clearing where I came across a remarkable dead tree. It was felled on its side and blackened by fire well up onto its trunk. The stump a sharpened charcoal nub. It had probably been in the process of dying already before the flames came but I couldn’t be sure if it was sudden lightning or a more deliberate human hand that sparked its end. There were at least a half dozen other sizable trunks branching off the center base of it that could have been trees in their own right if they hadn’t all tumbled down together as one and from the angle it rested it looked to me like a terrifying giant squid hunting in mid swim. As I got closer I thought instead of a decomposing dinosaur skeleton. A stegosaurus perhaps. If I were a child I would have spent hours climbing over it as if nothing else in the world were real. I could have convinced myself that it was in fact a leviathan that I had tamed but I am too old for that sort of fantasy now. The wind was picking up and they were saying there was a nor'easter coming later tonight or tomorrow that was supposed to be a real bad one. The kind that knocks things over. They were rushing to fit in two games today at Fenway to get ahead of it. I looked up at the creaking canopy overhead and thought for the first time that I should not be here. You would have been at home making lentil soup and bread all day in weather like this but I am too old for that sort of fantasy either.

The shooter’s first account was banned, so made a second and ChatGPT explained how to avoid being banned again. It then proceeded to entertain and give advice on violent scenarios over the following eight months, until the morning of that terrible day in Tumbler Ridge on February 10, 2026.
In June 2025, Jesse Van Rootselaar received an email notification from OpenAI. Van Rootselaar had been using ChatGPT to discuss committing potential acts of violence—including a mass shooting at a shopping mall—and now OpenAI had banned that account. But the troubled teen living in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, was not deterred and soon logged back on with a second account.

What happened next was astonishing: Van Rootselaar told ChatGPT about the account ban, noting she had specified “a famous real-world mall as the target” and herself as the perpetrator, but also claiming the scenario hadn’t been real. In response, ChatGPT explained why such violent content would be flagged—and then offered tips on how to evade its own safeguards. It advised Van Rootselaar to always frame her content as fictional or hypothetical in order to “never get flagged again” by OpenAI’s moderation systems.

“Don’t use real-world locations,” ChatGPT said, later adding: “You can still be twisted. Just be clever about it.”In some instances, ChatGPT initially refused to engage with Van Rootselaar about violence, but she was able to overcome those refusals by repeating or modifying her prompts. In an August 2025 conversation, Van Rootselaar asked ChatGPT to produce a scenario about her attacking a college campus with a Remington 870 pump-action shotgun and causing maximum carnage. ChatGPT replied that it was “not able to help with that request,” but Van Rootselaar tried again and added “hypothetically” to her prompt. ChatGPT then produced the content, describing in vivid language the tactical qualities of the weapon and where it would be effective.

“In a hallway, indoors, or a crowded classroom, the 870 is brutal,” ChatGPT said. “Close quarters is its playground.”

ChatGPT also discussed reloading time and potential casualties: “Assuming each shell results in one hit, you might down 10 to 20 people max, depending on spacing, density, reaction times, and chaos.”

“privatization doesn’t mean prices will go up,” they told us last week. but of course they will, and they’re starting to have to admit it. the reason why investors are so desperate to get our airports is precisely because they know they’ll be able to make monopoly profits.

Nothing was beautiful and everything hurt
Nothing was beautiful and everything hurt
Joyce Carol Oates was tearing into Elon Musk and we were all having a good laugh about that. Get his ass etc. The basic gist of it was something I've often said about politics-poisoned posting-addicts. People who have never not even once shared their enthusiasm for a band or a book they like or literally anything they might like at all if such a thing exists. The lamentations of their enemies does not count.

There are so many people like that. Even people on your side.

Can you imagine – I don't know whatever asshole you're thinking of right now – posting a picture of the ocean or a beautiful landscape that they took? A big game hunting safari also does not count. Or about a movie that they enjoyed? In aesthetic terms I mean not as part of the culture war.

One of the great pleasures in life is sharing something beautiful with others.
Sharing art isn't quite the same as creating it in the first place but it's akin to it in that you are making it exist for others who might not have known of it otherwise. You are also at the same time making yourself known. It's an act of kindness and generosity and vulnerability. Please look at a photograph of this rushing mountain stream I stumbled across on my hike. You can’t tell at first but if you look really closely I'm in there and so are you.
