It's not 1536, but Anne Boleyn has taken over the news. Recently a team of computer scientists, electrical engineers and a historical novelist think they have discovered the “true face” of Anne (& her mother) by applying AI-based computational facial recognition to Holbein sketches. The catch? /1

You would know if your device were listening to you 24/7 and transmitting everything you say to its manufacturer, because a brand new battery with full charge capacity would last for 20 minutes. The traffic would also be viewable on network sniffing: no one has ever detected it.

Let's talk about generative AI, contaminated information, and rhubarb. Once upon a time, Europe was at war. Food was scarce, and the government of the quote-unquote United Kingdom looked for alternatives. 1/

Closing out my year with a journal editor shocker 🧵 Checking new manuscripts today I reviewed a paper attributing 2 papers to me I did not write. A daft thing for an author to do of course. But intrigued I web searched up one of the titles and that's when it got real weird...

The USPS posting a NINE BILLION DOLLAR LOSS!!! sounds terrible. Certainly worse than if you said "USPS costs thirty dollars per person per year" even though that means the same thing and more accurately describes a government service

Some thoughts on the CR/minibus. 1 The Dems negotiating with Rs were not freelancing. They coordinated with Sen Schumer. A few were ready to give in on day one, others worked to maximize appropriations wins. Those voting for the 'deal' are the ones furthest away from electoral consequences.

I keep remembering that the DC of the 70s once explained that there were black people on Krypton, they'd just all gone to live on an island by themselves and were happy there and wanted to be left alone. And then they explained that there were black people in the Legion's time, too...

Gasoline Alley by Frank King from August 10, 1924.
Walt and Skeezix are home from their road trip, and Skeezix goes off to play with pal. Skeezix decides the grass needs watering and sets up a sprinkler but he ends up getting soaked. Walt goes to investigate and gets soaked as well. He discovers that Skeezix is responsible but decides that playing in the sprinkler is probably a good idea after spending time in the desert so they decide to make a game of it.

A lot of technical assessments of Iran’s nuclear program feel rushed. There’s an overreliance on fuel cycle basics and projections built on major unknowns while overlooking domestic factors eg institutional disruption, procurement challenges, and acute paranoia.

Let's talk about these two department store owners: brother and sister Louis Bamberger and Caroline Bamberger Fuld. From Newark, New Jersey. They are random people, basically. But in the late 1920s, with fascism taking over Europe, they made a choice that profoundly changed the world: 🧵

Why haven't we seen more backlash against the GOP's proposed cuts to Medicaid? One reason is that people may not know they're on Medicaid, because Medicaid has different names in different states (see 🧵). Another is that some people may not realize that they (or their kids) could qualify.

Such slipshod filmmaking works for the streaming model, since audiences at home are often barely paying attention. Several screenwriters who’ve worked for the streamer told me a common note from company executives is “have this character announce what they’re doing so that viewers who have this program on in the background can follow along.” (“We spent a day together,” Lohan tells her lover, James, in Irish Wish. “I admit it was a beautiful day filled with dramatic vistas and romantic rain, but that doesn’t give you the right to question my life choices. Tomorrow I’m marrying Paul Kennedy.” “Fine,” he responds. “That will be the last you see of me because after this job is over I’m off to Bolivia to photograph an endangered tree lizard.”)

Saw this version of the final Calvin & Hobbes online today and… if you can’t tell what’s wrong with it, that’s a shame. But adding shade to the white wrecks the thing. Modern repro keeps doing this: colourising strips at a greater level of “sophistication” than originally printed, and wrecking them.

Lucy pulls the football away from Charlie Brown and he is sent flying into the air. He shouts "AAUGH!" Instead of falling, Charlie Brown continues flying into the sky. He says "ha ha yes, it is finally happening..." He continues upward "I am ascending to the realm of God to take my fated place at his right hand." He goes up even further "this the reward for my endless suffering! This is my reward!!!" Lucy looks on in disbelief.
