This week, I review THE WHOLE DAM FAMILY AND THE DAM DOG (1905), an Edison comedy based on the wildly popular picture postcard that had become a phenomenon across the country. I cover the history of the gag, the postcard craze and the film's uncredited cast. moviessilently.com/2025/08/03/t...

The Whole Dam Family and the Dam Dog (1905) A Silent FIlm Review

An entire silent comedy based on… a postcard? That’s right, this little comedy played with the popular “whole Dam family gag” that was enjoying a moment in jokes, postcards, novelty songs and more.…

One of the really annoying things about rural living is that I do not receive mail at my home address (unreliable and unsecure mail boxes waaaay far from my house) but I do receive UPS and FedEx packages. Now, UPS and FedEx options are using USPS for "last mile" so I won't get the package.

THE RAT (1925) is a rather silly British film about the French Apache with the lead played by a Welshman and an American leading lady. It asks the important question: do you want to see a movie that is entirely a vehicle for Ivor Novello's profile? Many people did and do say yes.

My dad read to us and he deliberately messed up words (kids love to correct silly adults) and played with accented syllables so the right words sounded funny. Great memories. As opposed to training an AI voice model reading the story perfectly every time.

Was talking to someone who sincerely believed that the hedonism of the Weimar era brought on fascism and… I implore people to study this stuff. I am no expert but obviously my research is adjacent. When the world as you knew it has crumbled, some people try to cope, others try to seize power.

We need a “nostalgic favorite, no critical discussion needed” tag for social media. Like, yes, Garfield & Friends is not Shakespeare but I do love an episode or two to unwind now and again 🫠

Took this pic over a decade ago in South Carolina. No idea which species it is. Reminds me of those 70’s/80’s cat posters that said Hang in there!

Photo of a small frog, green on top and white/beige on bottom, hanging precariously on the end of a tiny branch. Tiniest piece of dry moss on the branch cause it’s in a swamp

The collapse of NaNoWriMo is really interesting to me. They said they were financially insolvent and… this thing used to just literally be a message board to discuss producing a first draft in November. Then it got gussied up, got too big (I suspect financial shenanigans) and died of AI indigestion

Eva Marie Saint, Oscar Winner for ‘On the Waterfront,’ Is Dead at 102

A luminous beauty with dramatic depth, she brought a layered intensity to harrowing roles and seduced Cary Grant in the romantic thriller “North by Northwest.”

some thoughts on Harry Potter as someone who was really into it as a kid then grew up the problem with a lot of discourse on HP, to me, is that a lot of people take the angle of "i understand this is important to you, so here's other books/franchises you can get into instead" that's not gonna work

It looks like the big adoption of AI is in low budget faith-based films that basically have a built-in guarantee of $10 million at the box office and an American fundamentalist protestant (ish?) audience that won’t question the ethics because, you know 🤷‍♀️
