Found this gem on my Rochester NY hike today. books.google.com/books/about/...
Book sitting flat on a wood table.
Cover is greenish fading to orange top left. Circular and triangle shapes sitting on a grid.

We don’t spend enough time talking about just how WEIRD all these people are. This is just an incredibly weird and insecure thing to say. Imagine any other SecDef ever being this weird and insecure?!

They quoted me in this New Yorker piece about AI today. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
“Let’s say there’s a world or time line I exist in where A.I. has been subject to regulation. It is ethical. It has no footprint environmentally,” the novelist Jeff VanderMeer, a prominent critic of A.I., told me over the phone. “With those guardrails in place, would I read an A.I. book? All I can say is no. And the reason is, in part, because I want to read something coming from a particular mind.” Using A.I., he said, “feels like a betrayal of the whole point of why you’re a writer.”

Something that never ceases to amuse/infuriate me about the US legal system is that there are separate standards for "reasonable person" and "reasonable [law enforcement] officer", and the "reasonable officer" standard kinda boils down to "reasonable person after several strong blows to the head".

This is a human rights abuse worthy of prosecution under intentional law. Minimally, they should be impeached and removed for this alone.

right, yes. one of the basic problems is that they think that thinking about something really hard is a type of sampling, and that you actually don't need to sample anything to get information, and that there is no difference between thinking about something and doing it.

ok I'm a little mad at this because the prosecutor basically blames the victim for the lack of charges. it's common after a media outcry over rape for prosecutors to revisit a case to save face, not out of actual concern for justice. #TW

You know when public attention can reverse a prosecutorial decision like this you almost get the sense that the decision to shrug it off in the first place was not based on an assessment of the quality of the evidence so much as an assessment of the seriousness of the crime.

Almost any infraction can be charged as a "crime." You can charge jaywalking as a "crime" and while few judges would put up with that shit, the plan is to disappear people before a real judge can stop them. Immigration judges are just normal DHS employees like the ICE thugs.

Currently writing about this. It's faster than GNFS, but (1) it requires access to a special oracle, (2) it isn't *quite* as fast as SNFS, and (3) calling it a "new" algorithm sort of obscures the fact that the core of the algorithm is from FUCKING 2007. Still a super cool result, of course.
