Whenever I see a current or former university president in the news for sexual misconduct, I think of this chart from 2015. (ABC seems to have pulled down the original Five Thirty Eight article, but here’s a Feministing blog about it.)

Chart of the Day: College presidents think rape is only a problem at other schools
According to Inside Higher Ed’s annual survey, US college and university presidents demonstrate some very wishful thinking when it comes to sexual assault. While about a third believe that it is preva...

I find this claim, which is now common in right-wing ed discourse, really astonishing. It rests at the core of the post-truth vision of "viewpoint diversity": we should not teach the conclusions that research shows to be correct; rather, we should validate empirically discredited ideas just because.
Fostering this civic orientation does not mean teaching students the “right” way to think or act
according to a preferred political or moral perspective. A transformative education is premised
on developing sound judgment, not on delivering correct conclusions.

Zero tolerance rules that all but require ‘ideal victims’ to be put into practice are, in fact, practicing rape culture by another name by denying real victims justice while tutting about how party culture creates gray areas that make punishment for rape impossible. /6

Listened to Pres. Kotlikoff’s message. I’m glad he included reexamining Greek life -that’s no small thing for a place like Cornell to say to alumni. Im glad to hear him acknowledge that Jane Doe is not unique but that many had similar experiences b/f. Alumni have been sharing their stories. /1

The point is that as a society, somewhat intentionally because the people who built the post-World War II public university system created this infrastructure on purpose, we house countless vital functions in our modern public universities.

I remember reading an article once looking at the age coding language around SA reporting and women in general (mostly in local papers). They found that men, 18 and up, were pretty consistently referred to as men...unless they were accused of SA and they it was "boy," "young man," or "teen."

While digging around their website, I found their ethics policy—including a section on AI-generated content. I suspect that’s a part of what happened here. And I’m upset about that too! I did NOT speak to a journalist with the assumption that my interview would be funneled into producing AI slop.

Earlier this week, I agreed to interviews with two USA Today journalists. They wrote fantastic articles about the Cornell case that I'm proud to have been a part of. What I did not know is that their employer considers interviews to proprietary and opens up recordings to be used by any journalist.

My PhD advisor, Peggy Sanday, published Fraternity Gang Rape (1990). She found gang rape functions as male bonding through domination: men use women to prove masculinity, gain status, & demonstrate loyalty. Group norms normalize coercion, erase consent, & institutional privilege shields perpetrators

“There was no sugarcoating in that article. Most details were included even if they were graphic or uncomfortable. I think it made a really big statement. To read the details of this alleged sexual assault was jarring for a lot of people and made a really big impact on them.”

Goals and ambitions may become impossible to achieve. Timelines and hopes for the future may be derailed. At scale, college sexual abuse is a systemic force to prevent women and marginalized victims from having the same opportunities, health, and happiness as predominantly male perpetrators.

We know that the best way to draw someone into a history major is in a class of 12. That's why you don't get classes of 12 as a service dept. You get 180 students, in two-hour chunks, with no breakout sessions or teaching assistants. You are set up to fail, at least in terms of attracting majors

We said goodbye to my gramma this week. She was a force of nature. She was witty, & smart, & kind. She loved the color aqua. She was always & will be my compass in so much of life. She lived to be 101. She died in her home of many decades with us next to her. She went gently. Here’s a photo I love.

What’s missing: 1/ Any framing about what higher is or has been that misses the big public investment post-WW2 and then massive disinvestment starting in the 1980s which spirals into rising costs and student debt is disingenuous at best. 5/
