Today is the birthday of writer & editor Dorothy Woolfolk (Oct. 1, 1913-Nov. 27, 2000). She was an editor at All American Comics (before it was part of DC) in the early 1940s & then at Marvel/Timely for 2 years & briefly for EC Comics. She later returned to DC as an editor in the early 70s.

The Beyond #25 (1954). On the cover two pilots fly a plane while the stewardess stands at the cockpit door and passengers can be seen on the other side. However, the reader can see that the pilots are skeletons in uniforms. One comments,
"Yes, stewardess. We'll weather the storm. You
can tell the passengers they'll sleep tonight. They'll have a nice, long sleep!"

Gasoline Alley by Frank King from September 30, 1923.
Walt and Skeezix are struggling to get Pal to understand fetch. He goes for the stick but doesn't bring it back. They decide to walk into town and try to discourage Pal from following. He keeps after them and in frustration, Walt throws a stick. This time, Pal not only goes for it but brings it back to Walt, who declares "Pal, you either have no brains at all or else you're a lot smarter than I am."

Someone in my area is selling these on Facebook marketplace and they're in a language I can't read, but I can't help thinking how pretty they'd all look on a few bookshelves.

I've met alot of comic creators over the last few decades. The vast majority have been great people and I've treasured meeting them. But I've met Louise Simonson several times and every time it's been wonderful, but this sealed the deal...she is the best. The absolute best.

The best part of Baltimore Comic-Con was that my youngest daughter finally got to meet her favorite comic creator, Louise Simonson, and get her Power Pack omnibus editions signed. And unsurprisingly, Louise was incredibly kind and sweet to her.

Flash Gordon by Alex Raymond from September 28, 1941.
In this six panel color Sunday strip, Flash is demonstrating his special rocket ship to US military and government officials when he receives an SOS from an oil tanker that is under attack by an enemy warship. He successtul destroys the warship and goes to help survivors of the tanker who escaped on lifeboats. But the last panel shows an attack squadron of planes that have just launched from an enemy aircraft carrier.

I didn't realize when I picked this up over the weekend that this was the first comic adaptation of Disney's Zorro series. The first of 7 appearances in Dell's Four Color series before getting its own. With Alex Toth on interior art.
