Who will clean any of this up?
At a church service in Chicago they had set up cardboard cutouts in the pews to represent the worshippers who would have attended mass if not for fear of being disappeared. Not far away I saw a laborer’s lunch had been left uneaten and spilled over onto the sidewalk outside of a home he must have just been working on. Laboring on. There’s a dumpster out front and a red white and blue flag themed porta-potty from a company called Patriot Portables. Three ladders still leaning up against the building.

It looks like it would have been a pretty tasty lunch. Even tossed aside like that and wasted now. A smear of orange hot sauce on the cracked styrofoam container. Not yet taken away by the wind. Such a beautiful seeming neighborhood too. I imagine it’s a very nice place to live. They say that Chicago is still surprisingly affordable.

It shows me home listings when I scroll now because I clicked on one or two at some point and so the computer believes that this is an integral datapoint that explains who I am. I just saw one hanging ten off a bluff that has been pummeled by eons of waves and so will not exist for much longer. Neither house nor bluff. Overlooking the water on Cape Cod. You could squeeze a couple of good years out of it still I thought. Until one awful night. I can’t afford it even now despite the implication but it’s a nice little nightmare to have.

I thought of a friend who was recently diagnosed with a terrible albeit not yet terminal disease but maybe that’s a bad analogy. A beach house is worth so much more than a person.

I don’t know how much longer it will sit there. Either the house or the guy’s lunch. Maybe everyone passing by assumes another worker is going to arrive soon to take care of it but it could be he’s already been disappeared himself.

AITA for correcting my girlfriend's family every time they mispronounce my turtle's name?
I have a turtle named Geoff. Yes I know Geoff is normally pronounced Jeff. His isnt. My girlfriend's family knows this and still calls him Jeff basically every time his name comes up.
His name starts with /dz/ instead of the normal American English J sound /d3/. So regular Geoff/Jeff is roughly /dzef/ and his is /dzef/. They are similar but they are NOT the same consonant. /d3/ is a voiced postalveolar affricate and /dz/ is a voiced retroflex affricate. Basically you make the beginning of "Jeff" with the tongue farther back/retracted, which gives it a harder, deeper "dzh" sound.
I'm really into etymology and historical linguistics so the spelling was intentional too. Geoff is already a weird spelling from a modern English perspective because gives you basically no reason to predict /dzef/ unless you already know the name. Obviously I am NOT claiming medieval Geoffrey was pronounced / dzef/. I

Two panel comic. Panel 1: two sharks are sitting in a cafe. A smaller shark holding a teacup says discreetly to the other, “okay, look at this couple behind you - but don’t make it obvious.” Panel 2: the other shark, a Great White shark, turns its gigantic head in the most obvious way possible to look across the room at some sharks chatting at another table.

Susan Sontag's 9/16/01 piece in The New Yorker got her crucified but it's one of the few things from that era that aged well. "'Our country is strong,' we are told again and again. I for one don’t find this entirely consoling. Who doubts that America is strong? But that’s not all America has to be."
The disconnect between last Tuesday’s monstrous dose of reality and the self-righteous drivel and outright deceptions being peddled by public figures and TV commentators is startling, depressing. The voices licensed to follow the event seem to have joined together in a campaign to infantilize the public. Where is the acknowledgment that this was not a “cowardly” attack on “civilization” or “liberty” or “humanity” or “the free world” but an attack on the world’s self-proclaimed superpower, undertaken as a consequence of specific American alliances and actions? How many citizens are aware of the ongoing American bombing of Iraq? And if the word “cowardly” is to be used, it might be more aptly applied to those who kill from beyond the range of retaliation, high in the sky, than to those willing to die themselves in order to kill others. In the matter of courage (a morally neutral virtue): whatever may be said of the perpetrators of Tuesday’s slaughter, they were not cowards. Our leaders are bent on convincing us that everything is O.K. America is not afraid. Our spirit is unbroken, although this was a day that will live in infamy and America is now at war. But everything is not O.K. And this was not Pearl Harbor. We have a robotic President who assures us that America still stands tall. A wide spectrum of public figures, in and out of office, who are strongly opposed to the policies being pursued abroad by this Administration apparently feel free to say nothing more than that they stand united behind President Bush. A lot of thinking needs to be done, and perhaps is being done in Washington and elsewhere, about the ineptitude of American intelligence and counter-intelligence, about options available to American foreign policy, particularly in the Middle East, and about what constitutes a smart program of military defense. But the public is not being asked to bear much of the burden of reality. The unanimously applauded, self-congratulatory bromides of a Soviet Party Congress seemed contemptible. The unanimity of the sanctimonious, reality-concealing rhetoric spouted by American officials and media commentators in recent days seems, well, unworthy of a mature democracy.

Those in public office have let us know that they consider their task to be a manipulative one: confidence-building and grief management. Politics, the politics of a democracy—which entails disagreement, which promotes candor—has been replaced by psychotherapy. Let’s by all means grieve together. But let’s not be stupid together. A few shreds of historical awareness might help us understand what has just happened, and what may continue to happen. “Our country is strong,” we are told again and again. I for one don’t find this entirely consoling. Who doubts that America is strong? But that’s not all America has to be.

I reach above me and pull down a file on
Guatemala. It is on the CIA coup of 1954. Why did the US destroy that small country? Because the landless movement and the Left fought to elect a democratic politician - Jacobo Árbenz - who decided to push through a moderate land reform agenda. Such a project threatened to undercut the land holding of the United Fruit Company, a US conglomerate that strangled Guatemala. The CIA got to work. It contacted retired Colonel Carlos Castillo Armas, it paid off brigade commanders, created sabotage events, and then seized Arbenz in the presidential palace and sent him to exile.
Castillo Armas then put Guatemala through a reign of terror. 'If it is necessary to turn the country into a cemetery in order to pacify it,' he said later, 'I will not hesitate to do so! The CIA gave him lists of Communists, people who were eager to lift their country out of poverty. They were arrested, many executed. The CIA offered Castillo Armas its benediction to kill; A Study of Assassination, the CIA's killing manual, was handed over to his butchers. The light of hope went out in this small and vibrant country.
