A metaphor I will continue to flog is British politics is now little more than a customer complaints department for capitalism. On the rare occasions any of the complaints are sent upstairs to management, most of them go in the bin.

All the lads declared War On Fake News in 2016 to strike back at Faragery and Trumpism, then swiftly clocked that this would mean fighting against the Tories, the Sun, the Mail and the Times, and pivoted to all-out war against Twitter leftists and Russian Facebook. This will be much the same shit.

A British counter disinformation centre is long overdue, and very welcome.
For too long,
the approach of successive
governments to disinformation has been disjointed and without organisation, allowing states like Russia to amplify lies about this country, to sow division and stoke tensions. This new National Centre for Information Defence is an opportunity to finally take on this very serious threat."
The Foreign Affairs Committee recommended exactly this in March. We were extremely worried about what seemed to be a complacency of the British establishment at the disinformation being promoted from abroad, particularly from Russia. We thought the response from Whitehall had essentially been 'talk to the hand because the face ain't listening, but it seems we were wrong. I'm absolutely delighted.

This is why I hate the way "debate" gets treated as some sort of sacred ideal when it is, in fact preening intellectual masturbation. It's the thinnest veneer over an exercise in giving serious consideration to the least ethical and evil ideas going. Where slick argument strangles reason.

It is absurd to talk about “our democracy is not for sale” in a system that is 100% reliant upon huge bungs from wingnut zillionaires and businesses seeking favours and contracts. What we mean is: it should not be for sale to just anyone, for the benefit of unsanctioned political parties.

ADHD is not being overdiagnosed, major Government report set to find
Hello and welcome to The Essential, where we dig deeper into today’s big stories.

How much help should someone with ADHD receive – in clinical support, employment and via social security? It’s a live debate in Whitehall, because of rising costs for the NHS and UK benefits. For some, the idea that far too many people are being diagnosed with ADHD or autism has taken root.

But what does the evidence show? A new, landmark Government review – authored by clinicians – has concluded that ADHD and autism are not widely over-diagnosed in the UK. Read our exclusive report here, which explains what the experts say ... and what they think should happen next.

The thing about trying not to pick a side is that the nazis *instantly recognize* which side you picked. They immediately identify you as an ally. They know exactly what side you're on. It doesn't fool the victims, it doesn't fool the Nazis, the only people it could possibly fool is centrists.

Why no bank holidays from now until Christmas? This is why.
Scene is a Victorian drawing room; a group of gentlemen is assembled for a meeting. At the front of the room, stood at a large blackboard, is SIR JOHN LUBBOCK, the inventor of bank holidays. The board has a calendar drawn on it. Also in the room is a SMALL DOG sat on the floor.

1
LUBBOCK:
And so gentlemen, I, Sir John Lubbock, hereby announce

2
LUBBOCK:
The invention of ‘bank holidays’!

Legally protected days off work, for the whole nation to rest.

AUDIENCE:
CLAP CLAP CLAP

3
LUBBOCK (marking days on the calendar):

My first two bank holidays shall be at Easter...
and then another straight after in May...

4
LUBBOCK:
And then - what the hell - another one in May!

And then one in August!

AUDIENCE:
Hurrah!

5
AUDIENCE MEMBER:
So many, Sir John?

LUBBOCK (grabbing him by the lapel, his face ecstatic)
Life is for living, man!

6
AUDIENCE MEMBER:
And then in the Autumn, sir….?

7
[Lubbock looks sideways. He is distracted by the SMALL DOG. It has started scooting its bum across the floor]

8
LUBBOCK:
Ugh.

[his face has dropped, it's totally grossed him out]

9
LUBBOCK:
OK that'll do

AUDIENCE MEMBER:
What?

10
AUDIENCE MEMBER:
Is that it? You’ve put loads in the summer…

LUBBOCK:
Yeah

no more bank holidays till Christmas.

11
AUDIENCE MEMBER:
Sir - have you just condemned future generations to long winters of unalleviated toil... because you saw my dog scooting its arse and it killed your vibe?

12
LUBBOCK:
It's so gross

AUDIENCE MEMBER:
Rollo can’t help it!

[dog continues to scoot across floor]

[Ends]

There's an instructive lesson on how UK political journalism actually functions here, nestled between the first excerpt, and the convenient timing of this bombshell report on the Mandelson-McSweeney[-Starmer] alliance, for anybody with the cognitive capacity to put two and two together.
On 19 June – two weeks and two days before the general election – around 200 Guardian journalists crammed into a conference room in King’s Place to practise this custom. Except, the meeting was quite exceptional. Chaired by chief leader writer Randeep Ramesh, the endorsement meeting saw the paper’s most senior journalists – not only its columnists, but several of its lobby reporters – argue forcefully that the Guardian should back Starmer to the hilt or risk damaging their reputation not only with readers but also with the incoming government, much to the dismay of several of the paper’s younger journalists and journalists of colour.Analysis

There are a lot of similarities between “the hard right”, “Christian nationalists”, “ultranationalists” and “the extreme far right”, wherever they may be on Earth. Is there catch-all term? I’d go with “the global fascist movement” but I’d accept “the right”, since these are increasingly synonymous.
