ENROL. VOTE. Politics doesn’t need your attention to affect your life. #nzpol
You can avoid political conversations. you can mute political accounts. you can say "i don't do politics.

but you cannot mute the policies that determine your wages, rent, taxes, healthcare, schools, roads, rights and standard of living.

politics doesn't need your attention to affect your life.

The Dutch don't just build cycle tracks, they build cycle networks. Over motorways, under junctions, then branching off to the gym, football pitches & other local destinations. Safe, direct routes connecting the places people need to go. This is how you make cycling a normal part of everyday life.

Life seems to be happening *around* people at this current historical moment. This means that commentary is the main form of action for the vast majority. And it turns out that commentary keeps folks anxious and unfulfilled. People don't have a clear sense of what they can actually DO.

At some point someone has to stand up and go "Ok everyone shut the fuck up. You all didn't want Three Waters, so you've got this now. This is what you voted for. It's going to be expensive because Things Cost Money, and you've all underpaid for decades because of political cowardice".

Lack of govt spending means longer wait times at the hospital and for treatment, more homeless people, fewer educated people but also a tanking economy due to lower profits and high unemployment. So yeah I guess good luck and best wishes to everyone!

I feel like it's pretty well known that austerity is a shitty response to bad economic conditions? Like we can't just reduce-government-spending our way to prosperity. How is that even supposed to work?

Great to see that National support 30 weeks Paid Parental Leave. Especially after they voted against the introduction of PPL. Blocked the extension to 26 weeks for several years. Canceled 33 pay equity claims. And just this year, cut Best Start payments for the majority of new parents.

I actually took time off this school holidays, so we came to Rotorua and rode the Whakarewarewa Forest Loop, which we've been meaning to do for yeeeears. Nearly-12yo did an awesome job, weather was perfect, and a rented e-bike meant I could actually do it. So fucking great.
A view over Rotorua from the Whakarewarewa Forest Loop. Blue sky, blue lake, with lots of green and punga in the foreground.

Only having politicians with personal or family wealth is objectively bad for democracy. Allowances to make sure people elected from all walks of life, no matter where you live, can be effective at their jobs isn't the issue. People with existing personal or family wealth taking the piss is.

The people who "won lotto" in Aotearoa are those with the privilege of intergenerational wealth (etc.) who bought property early and used it to get more wealth. Not through hard work, just an economy that was set up in their favour. And then they have the gall to pick on ppl in social housing. FFS.

But this is *incredibly obviously* not universally true. One easy example, as a pro sports team you reduce wage bills sacking players. But the impact of sacking your best, highest paid player on your organisation is obviously much more than sacking your worst scrub, despite on its face 'saving' more

The thing is, efficient forms of transport often look empty because they're efficient. A road packed with cars is not an efficient used of space when 20 cars' worth of people can sit on a single bus, or, more or less, 20 bikes. Yet they take up 10 times the space of either. Cars ruin cities.
