This illustrates not just the hypocrisy but the self-defeating nature of Trump's policies. Under MAGA doctrine, he enacts protectionism, trashes the alliance with Europe, and demands Europe take more responsibility for its own defence, and then finds it has consequences the US dislikes.

This was a really great episode of sci fi TV. Well worth a look independent of the larger show. Though in the morning after I'm a little angry at the state of season 2 of the show, given that they still had it in them to pull this out. Stories like this should have been the whole season.

As a reminder, we're not talking a cheeky top-up of a few quid here. You know, rounding a deal up to a convenient milion. In 2018 alone, only £11m of their sponsorship was legit. The rest - £134 MILLION QUID (according to the Premier League report) was Abu Dhabi top up funding, via the sponsors.

Wonder how much money Man CIty paid Freshfields to come up with their argument for why the Premier League are wrong about their hidden funding. It was their sponsor's money. The sponsors just happened to request financial aid from Abu Dhabi, allocated for this purpose. Which was always granted.

The club denied that there had ever been any DIsguised Funding Scheme of the type alleged by the PL. Its case was that the PL had misunderstood how AD Sponsorship Agreements had been funded by AD Sponsors. The reality was (the Club contended)

a) that AD Sponsors had always been liable for all Recorded Sponsorship Fees and all Recorded Sponsorship Fees had in fact been paid to the Club by AD Sponsors from their own funds/resources. No part of any Recorded Sponsorship Fee had been paid by ADUG or from or using ADUG funds

b) AD Sponsors had from time to time applied for financial assistance from the AD Government towards their liability to pay the Recorded Sponsorship Fees. Such applications had been granted, and financial assistance had been provided to the AD Sponsors by the AD Government via the CPC. In each case the level of financial assistance provided by the AD Government to the relevant Sponsor had been in the amount that the PL wrongly contended represented a Tagged Sum from ADUG.
