"about 15 years ago i sent out a mass email stating that i had used the Troy Aikman quarterback rating system to decide that the right choice was to switch email providers from Aol to Comcast. using the same system i'm pleased to announce that the Troy Aikman quarterback ratings system has given me the clarity to go ahead and switch genders.
i'm available to anyone by phone that would like to crunch the numbers. thanks eveyrbody and sorry for the mass email! and thanks Troy Aikman!"

Start with Mitch's thread. The Oregonian ed board reduced Tiffany to the equivalent of a background player with no lines or name. Our first unanimous vote on City Council was electing her our first VP. That unity was mirrored back in the work she took on in 2025 - bringing Council together.

I have three city council representatives. When asked about a survey showing that most Portlanders don't feel represented, not a single one talked about responding to constituent emails or phone calls. Your newsletter and constituent coffees aren't cutting it. Read and respond to communications.
A recent survey commissioned by Oregon Values & Beliefs Center found that fewer than a third of Portland voters said they feel represented by anyone on the 12-member City Council and only slightly more said they trusted the body. What would you do to improve these perceptions?
I think most people have heard about Council conflict and grandstanding. Also, there are 12 of us rather than 4, meaning less media coverage of our individual accomplishments. These factors don’t inspire favorable ratings or feeling represented by a Councilor.

I hope in this campaign I can highlight things I’ve done that I suspect most District 3 residents will agree with, but might not know about. Like strengthening the chronic nuisance property law, reducing unnecessary burdens on small businesses, and being careful with tax dollars, such as shifting “welfare check” calls from police officers to less expensive personnel, and insisting on getting back as much money as we put into a Moda deal. I hope more people will feel represented after reading my voters’ pamphlet statement!A recent survey commissioned by Oregon Values & Beliefs Center found that fewer than a third of Portland voters said they feel represented by anyone on the 12-member City Council and only slightly more said they trusted the body. Our new system has been in effect for 20 months, and it is natural that people are still watching and waiting to see how it works. My experience of moving through the city and being constantly stopped and greeted by Portlanders, whether from my district or not, points to a real sense of access to government that was previously lacking. My office’s newsletter goes to 10,000 people every week, and my constituent coffees are consistently attended. People are testifying at Council who have never done so before. People are receiving district-based support who previously did not know who to ask. I’m not doubting the survey’s methods or some people’s sense of disenfranchisement, but I know that building trust and engaging people is a slow process and my office is working hard on it.A recent survey commissioned by Oregon Values & Beliefs Center found that fewer than a third of Portland voters said they feel represented by anyone on the 12-member City Council and only slightly more said they trusted the body. Knowing how to contact your elected officials is difficult under normal circumstances, and there is a learning curve when you’re implementing a new form of government. People don’t know if they should contact their councilor by district, issue area, by the policy committees they serve on, etc. We need to do a better job teaching people how to navigate the new form of government and how to advocate for their preferred issues. My office has tried a variety of ways to reach our constituents, including but not exclusive to: email newsletters, social media on TikTok, Instagram, and Bluesky, monthly constituent coffees, and in district “office hours” at various small businesses. I do in-district events every Friday as well. We did not send out a paper mailer because we did not want to give the impression of electioneering on office taxpayer dollars, but in the off cycle we will.

This, in a letter to the Oregonian today from the chief petitioner of the "participatory budgeting" initiative, inadvertently demonstrates why it is such terrible policy. It's NOT "budgeting" if you can't say (or don't understand) where the money comes from.
The Oregonian/OregonLive’s editorial on the participatory budgeting measure parrots the same scare tactics of the measure’s opponents by claiming it would likely force cuts to core services (“Editorial endorsement November 2026: Vote ‘no’ on Portland’s pricey participatory budgeting measure,” Sept. 27). That is not what this measure requires. Measure 26-267 clearly states the city would not have to use General Fund dollars at all; it just requires enough funding (~$16 million or the equivalent of 2% of the General Fund) to ensure residents have a direct and meaningful say over some of the public investments made on their behalf. The City Council can meet the small obligation from Portland’s entire $8.5 billion budget.

Were they not paying attention to the Council budget debate? Unless the proponents can show where there is a spare pile of $16 million discretionary dollars - they can't, and won't - their proposal will necessarily cause significant cuts somewhere in an already impossibly tight budget.
