We are outraged at the news that PPA has been calling reformers like @councilorkanal.bsky.social "anti-labor" in the WWeek. We are shocked by reports in the Oregonian of police intimidation of @councilormorillo.bsky.social & and Councilor Kanal. These unconscionable actions must cease.

PPA President is back to posting regularly on Facebook after they failed to get their ballot measure approved. He says "“Portland police officers are subject to constant scrutiny. They wear body cameras and all of their actions are weighed and measured constantly." But do they turn the cameras on?
Portland Police Association Facebook Post from 21 hours ago with a quote from PPA President Aaron Schmautz and a picture of Councilor Green in front of a computer monitor on the dais.

KPTV.COM Headline beneath the image says "Police union calls for Portland city councilor's resignation over resurfaced social media posts"

The quote from PPA President Aaron Schmautz is:

“Portland police officers are subject to constant scrutiny. They wear body cameras and all of their actions are weighed and measured constantly. That councilor Green does not understand that given his time in office is confounding but not surprising. His response is in line with the comments he made. Unaccountable, harmful, and disqualifying.”

Fucking shout out to the Mercury. Reporting in this town is too often used to defend power + attack those who would question it rather than the other way around. Power is not distributed equally and a journalist’s job is to help the public analyze who has it, who doesn’t + how it’s being wielded.

The City Council needs its own goddamned lawyers. Robert does not work for councilors. There are patterns to City counsel's opinions; imho they're not very tightly correlated with eventual litigation outcomes.

The cop reply in the PCEF-raiding initiative lawsuit doubles down on their dumbest arguments. Among many, here's my favorite. "Third-party circulators" HIRED BY THE COPS, botched their own signatures, submitted bad petitions, and THE CITY violates the 1st Amendment by following the actual rules?!
The burden the City imposed on voters is severe by any measure. Through a regime of disqualifications, the City’s preprocessing eliminated thousands of elector signatures by way of whole-sheet rejections based on perceived deficiencies in a circulator’s certification, over which no individual voter had control. See Gallaway Decl. ¶¶ 27–28, 36, 38, ECF No. 14-4. Voters were punished for the penmanship of third-party circulators over whom they had no authority or control. That is the type of burden the First Amendment will not tolerate.

Controversial opinion, apparently? It’s good when there are city workers with enough moral fortitude to stop and gather evidence when they find out canvassers are lying to the public for signatures. It erodes democracy and engagement when you give your signature and find out you were lied to.
