I know this makes me sound like a starry-eyed naif, but this is a false choice. Everyone should be able to go to college if they want to. Bricklayers should get to read Plato, learn advanced math, take a dance class, work in a lab, study abroad

I believe fraternity hazing and military hazing and sports team hazing where men abuse each other is acclimating them into a broader culture of abuse where they will then believe it is their right to abuse other more vulnerable people. It’s so insidious. And that’s also why I think men defend it

I’ve heard three talks in the last couple of months by very prominent skeptics of AI who have all argued that the solution to the problem of AI in education is smaller classes and more teacher/faculty attention. I don’t know how that happens without a massive, massive investment in public education

Carceral solutions rarely fix things but I do think we should have “statutory manslaughter” laws: because of the power differential, the auto driver is always at fault (and liable) for an accident involving injury or death to a pedestrian or cyclist

to place the sexual and reproductive exploitation of black women at the center of your understanding of american slavery is to see that the system was forced birth and this, in turn, should lead to a more expansive vision of what the 13th amendment actually guarantees.

“Silly” is a good way to put it! There were excesses in 2020 but they were mostly low-stakes efforts by well-intentioned people to address real injustices. The excesses of the right during the same era were far more harmful. The reckoning we need now is about how elites lost sight of that.
