I wish journalists could buy layoff insurance. So many of us move to other cities and other countries for jobs, but we can be laid off at any time, while still on the hook for leases, car payments, student loans, and other expenses. I couldn't apply for unemployment because I was on a work visa.

OK technically you can (iirc) get out of your MA plan within the first year and go into regular Medicare. After that: very expensive, often impossible: you're trapped in the MA. That offs you to boost profits.

Folks, when you/your fam start Medicare (age 65) DO NOT CHOOSE MEDICARE ADVANTAGE. IF YOU CHOOSE IT YOU ARE LOCKED IN ***FOREVER***! MA health plans block your regular Medicare. They get even richer. They siphon up the profit; taking your Medicare 7 giving you less. You die even sooner; and sicker.

In the background, mist rises over a field just starting to recover from a controlled burn, with tree covered hills barely visible in the distance. In the foreground, a purple dotted with rainwater blooms from a curling vine. The flower looks like it is from the moon but it is actually a passion flower. I do not know enough flower anatomy to describe it but it is alien and purple with fine maroon stripes and a green stamen.

In this powerful piece on libraries, this comment stuck out. I went to ALA for the first time this year, and I was struck by the prominent presence of corporate vendors, many of which are sucking libraries dry… www.nytimes.com/interactive/...
Photo of librarian Crystal Gates with quote: I would increase access to electronic materials. Our budget can’t keep pace with demand. The book that I can personally get on Kindle or Audible for $3.99 costs my library $80 to $120, and then we have to return it in three years. I’m limited in the number of checkouts or the number of people. I don’t mind one-copy, one-user restrictions. But telling me I’m going to spend $80 on a book that my patrons no longer have access to in 12 months? It’s not getting damaged. It’s not getting wet. It’s not getting torn up.

Florence Pugh has used this East of Eden press tour as an opportunity to talk on a major stage about the Cornell 7 and violence against women, calling out Instagram for suppressing her posts about this on social media. Support her work! variety.com/2026/tv/news... variety.com/2026/film/gl...
Florence Pugh‘s press tour for Netflix’s “East of Eden” brought her to “The View,” where co-host Sara Haines brought up the Oscar nominee’s recent social media posts speaking out on the sexual assault case at Cornell University.

“Even in modern times, women have to bear the consequences of sexual violence, like the allegations currently playing out with the so-called Cornell 7,” Haines said. “The case is still pending, and some of the accused have denied any wrongdoing, but I saw what you wrote about this. This was really important for you. Can you explain why you felt the need to speak up“Rape is something that lives. The fear of it lives in our bodies, and when stories like this come out and it’s really not picked up in the way that you hope it’s picked up, it makes me feel scared, it makes me feel anxious, it made me feel so much rage,” Pugh answered. “I’m lucky enough to do what I do and I have a platform and I wanted to talk about it.”Florence Pugh Speaks Out
