As a PhD student designing my first survey, I added what I thought was a throwaway question at the end. To my surprise, thousands of academics answered it! The paper is out today: doi.org/10.1093/pnas...

The idea that Putin is blackmailing or extorting Trump assumes that Trump has some sense of right and wrong—some loyalty, decency, or respect for democracy—that he’s willing to betray. There’s no evidence of this. Trump worships power. He thinks Putin is powerful. That’s it. That’s all there is.

Sometimes my wife and I like to send each other text messages as though they’re democratic fundraising messages, and I believe she has produced the jewel of the form.
, it's
and I
have some personal news to share with you.
Being a mom is one of the greatest joys of my life, and I feel deeply that we should have salad tonight
This year has been challenging in many ways, and I have immense gratitude for the kindness and support of family, community, and people like you who have continued to stand by me through everything. It means the world, and I wanted you to be among the first to know that squash is in the oven and kale is in the fridge. As many of you are aware, ve been navigating one of the most challenging periods of my day while waiting for dinner.
Facing baseless federal hunger brought on by not eating since lunch, fighting for the working kids of this country, and now caring for a mean toddler and helping him grow up in a world that isn't always easy. But it has also reminded me exactly why I do this work and who I do it for.
I will never stop working to eat dinner. I will never stop fighting for what is right, even when there is also some feta in the fridge. And I will never stop being so very thankful that you are by my side in this important work and that there is tahini in the pantry for dressing
With love and gratitude,
stop to end

College degrees don’t “hold less value” than they used to. They’re just more expensive. That’s a political choice

I know this makes me sound like a starry-eyed naif, but this is a false choice. Everyone should be able to go to college if they want to. Bricklayers should get to read Plato, learn advanced math, take a dance class, work in a lab, study abroad

I believe fraternity hazing and military hazing and sports team hazing where men abuse each other is acclimating them into a broader culture of abuse where they will then believe it is their right to abuse other more vulnerable people. It’s so insidious. And that’s also why I think men defend it

I’ve heard three talks in the last couple of months by very prominent skeptics of AI who have all argued that the solution to the problem of AI in education is smaller classes and more teacher/faculty attention. I don’t know how that happens without a massive, massive investment in public education

Carceral solutions rarely fix things but I do think we should have “statutory manslaughter” laws: because of the power differential, the auto driver is always at fault (and liable) for an accident involving injury or death to a pedestrian or cyclist

Maybe not! Writing and programming might be fundamentally different skills (though I don't think so, since writing code IS employing various languages).

OK, so I'm an English professor, and my sense is that for humanistic or journalistic writing, folks have to know what good writing is and how to do it so that, even if they use an LLM, they can fix what it produces. Would you say that the same is true for programmers?

Ashley Reed @thematterhorn.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
Remember when MS Word started offering to convert Word docs to HTML, but the HTML would be absolute garbage? Is that similar to what LLMs produce when people use them to "vibe-code"? (Legitimately asking, but feel free to ignore if you don't have time to educate me)
