Walking or biking somewhere like this makes me furious. The lack of dignity and respect baked into our infrastructure and driver behavior is fucked up.

Angry neighbors may have accomplished something that years of advocacy could not: Reducing the minimum fire lane from 20 feet to 12 feet. This has been approved by the fire department and SDOT's Transportation Operations Division. My source at SDOT says this is a precedent.

Seattle bike ridership had a record-breaking summer. 🚲 That is why ungapping the map matters: every new connection makes the entire bike network more useful, comfortable, & accessible. The numbers show people want to bike. Let’s keep removing the gaps in our network & make it possible citywide.

People can be made so completely dependent on drugs, that they perceive those drugs to represent “freedom” for them. But can anything you’re that dependent on really make you “free?” That seems like a really warped defination of freedom. Now replace “drugs” with “cars.” Discuss. #CarDependency

🧵 Solutions to keep people safe while traveling on our streets are known. @transportation.seattle.gov has the expertise to fix dangerous streets, but they are often hobbled by red tape and "the Seattle Process." Example: unelected historic districts board can veto proposed safety projects.

Ways to prevent dangerous street takeovers or "sideshows" include reducing lanes, building protected intersections, and adding modal filters.

Good urban design removes conflict points between modes for the safety and efficiency of everyone. People walking and cycling don't want their lives threatened by motorists. Motorists don't want their commute to be slowed down. The compromise is equitable infrastructure.
