This is why we can’t have a comfortable swim in a river in the PNW and it’s a steep price to pay but I’m in.

Me: We should make biking safer and more accessible. Car brains: Yeah, well you can't haul the entire contents of a Walmart on your bicycle! I know we're not dealing with logic here, but it's incredible that these are the kinds of conversations you have with people.

Sometimes Yelp’s defaulting to driving directions horrifies me with a jump scare like this. Driving directions to literally just cross the street at the same corner.

I think an under appreciated part of being fluent in “car-free city life” is being able to go to almost any other city and easily figure out how to get around where you need/want to go. It’s like 90% the same with minor differences and it comes naturally because at home it’s 90% known va unknowns.

Heading to Portland on a new train. It’s nice. Interesting: the little seat reservation screens are in fact used after they scan your ticket.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: I'll believe that fuel is too expensive when I don't routinely see people parked up in their cars with the engine running.

I’ve come to understand that the greatest and most consistent American business strategy is corporations extracting maximum profits from something (benefiting primarily mega-rich individuals), leaving a huge environmental mess, and then fucking off, leaving taxpayers on the hook for the cleanup.

The scene: A decent sized trailhead parking lot for maybe 20+ cars, devoid of any cars. A group of 13 people, many with trekking poles and backpacks stand near the trail, opposite the parking spaces, directly in front of the trailhead sign/kiosk. We are talking about the hike we've just completed.

Halloween is coming. You don’t have to go to a “trunk-or-treat” event in Seattle! You can close your neighborhood street to through-traffic – for free! Trick-or-Streets permits are free and easy to get. Join here: seattle.gov/transportation/trick-or-streets

Tens of millions of American motorists believe there's nothing wrong with texting at a stoplight. Or driving 73 in a 60mph zone. Or changing lanes without signaling. Or rolling right on red without coming to a full stop. But somebody has to do something about cyclists who don't follow the rules.

Bike/pedestrian networks don't take 30 years to build. Stop accepting those timelines in your community. The best practices have been proven & they already exist. Safety should already be the #1 priority. The ROI is unbeatable. The timeline is a moral document and it shouldn't be generational.

Alright @mayor.seattle.gov please ELI5 why SPR needs to drive full size pickup on the walking paths through a park full of kids (mid-day on a Saturday) to park 10 ft from the bathroom doors to service the bathrooms. Carrying rolls of TP is light work, street parking is 100 ft away, and carts exist.

It's wild how underserved the western US is by train. Not a single Amtrak route goes through Wyoming or South Dakota. Only one stop in all of Idaho, and it's in a tiny town in the panhandle. Boise? Twin Falls? Cheyenne? Missoula? Billings? Rapid City? Sioux Falls? Nada. Crazy.
