Conservatives know legalizing apartment building is good for a free democratic society, which is why they work so hard to stop it.

Wait this is actually really exciting! If @transportation.seattle.gov can break or circumvent this rule to narrow streets to have more on-street parking, we can do it for good things too! Like widening sidewalks, pocket parks, and street dining!

[middleaged guy in front of vacant, boarded up building]
-I’m a volunteer landmark historian and I'm here to document this building
-In the mid-1980s it was Ned's Diner, the very first restaurant in the region to serve loaded potato skins
-a vital part of the foodways of Wallingfordian culture in the late 20th century
-if the city grants my historic landmark designation we can preserve this important piece of culinary heritage
-honoring our forebears and their innovations in casual family dining
-oh and also they won’t be able to put a 64-unit apartment building here

Rain or shine, sun or snow, you can now break bread outdoors year-round. Thanks to @cmrestler.bsky.social’s work, our favorite restaurants will no longer have to tear down and rebuild their setups each year. It’s official: Outdoor dining is here to stay.

During the championship final, the crowd filled the plaza and spilled into the closed street. We do not read that as a capacity failure. We read it as demand evidence. The U District needs more room for people, and it needs it at the station.

I said at the Historic Board that anyone from the Munich Christmas Market or New Orleans Bourbon Street would say how important car barriers are. Seattle City Council Appointee Jonathan Kiehnau responded that mentioning those tragedies is “catastrophizing” and that it won’t happen here. 🫠👍

Join us at the Ballard Locks on Aug 29 to see salmon and learn how we can help them! Spoiler alert: We need to restore their habitat by daylighting rivers, removing armoring, planting trees along the water. Aka turn private waterfronts and floodplains into restored public parks and salmon habitat!
Salmon collage saying salmon habitat “needs to improve” in the style of King County health inspection ratings on the left. A big silvery salmon is the on the right.

I read the Pike Place Market Vehicle Access Pilot Evaluation Technical Memo. It's a great data source. But the UW Urban Freight Lab's recommendation to make access control seasonal is 1) unsupported by evidence and 2) based solely on (perceived) sales without consideration of other community values.
