Katie Wilson is rolling out the proposed Seattle Transit Measure renewal right now. The measure will double in size from 0.15% to 0.3%, maxxing out the authority available to the city under the state's transportation benefit district provisions. It's a ten year renewal.

The STM funds around 7-10% of Metro service inside the city. That sounds like a small number but it is some of the most important service in the city and having it go away would leave more holes. We need fewer bus service holes. We need 2019-era buses back. This will get us there.

There are going to be a lot of questions about "why not this" or "how about the other" and they are absolutely fair to ask while we go through the process of getting this to the ballot. But ultimately, a transit rider turned Mayor is putting this proposal forward. She knows how buses work.

I know sales tax sucks. Every advocate you can think of knows it, too. But this is what we have so we go with it while we keep leaning on the city and state. We can always lower the sales tax rate later. Council may try to "tweak" this for other priorities. The priority must be bus, please.

To be scrupulously fair to any media outlet attempting to cover the Mayor of Seattle: We have had something like five consecutive (including interim) Mayors who got elected on a platform and then did...none of that. It could be an actual shock that a Mayor is doing what they said they would.

The MASS coalition, an alliance of 13 organizations working toward a safer, more accessible, and climate-aligned transportation system in Seattle, has released a letter to Mayor Wilson urging her to advance these progressive priorities. Read the full letter at: www.masscoalition.org ♿️🚶🚊🚎🛗🚲🛴🌎
Seattle, WA — The MASS (Move All Seattle Sustainably) Coalition—an alliance of 13 organizations working toward a safer, more accessible, and climate-aligned transportation system—released a public letter today calling on Mayor Katie Wilson to take swift, visible action on a set of near-term priorities. With Wilson’s election—and her
deep roots in the movement, the MASS Coalition is stepping forward with renewed clarity, unity, and ambition. As its letter notes, Mayor Wilson’s “recent electoral victory creates a historic mandate and an opportunity to translate progressive campaign commitments into
real results for Seattle,” citing her long record as a transit advocate and her previous leadership of the coalition. Wilson co-founded the MASS Coalition in 2018 to connect Seattle’s diverse and vibrant neighborhoods, minimize reliance on private vehicles, achieve Vision Zero, make Seattle carbon-neutral, create walkable communities, and ensure equitable access to transportation for all people.

A Vision for a City That Moves People, Not Just Cars
The coalition’s collective recommendations span four areas—mobility, accessibility, livability, and climate—and emphasize projects that are urgent, equitable, and feasible. These actions, MASS writes, “will improve Seattle in multiple, mutually reinforcing ways” and represent significant early opportunities for the Wilson administration. Its letter calls
for redesigning Seattle’s most dangerous streets, expanding frequent transit, and filling critical gaps in the bike network: not as isolated projects, but as the backbone of a
transportation system that allows people to move safely and reliably without needing a car. The letter also urges the City to strengthen neighborhood livability and ensure communities can meet daily needs close to home through people-centered planning and
more connected urban design. It also calls for stronger climate accountability by requiring transportation and related projects to demonstrate how they su…The MASS Coalition Stands Ready to Partner
The MASS Coalition brings together a broad cross-section of Seattle’s transportation, climate, and community organizers and advocates. It currently consists of 350 Seattle, America Walks, Cascade Bicycle Club, Fix the L8, Nondriver Alliance, Seattle Streets
Alliance, Seattle Subway, Seattle Transit Blog, Sierra Club Washington, Transit Equity for All, Transit Riders Union, Transportation Choices Coalition, and the Urbanist. As stated in its letter, the coalition is ready to collaborate with the new administration: offering
volunteer power, technical expertise, and community engagement capacity to help accelerate implementation. “We stand ready to collaborate with your administration to pursue these actions…Seattle can achieve something truly great,” the letter concludes, “when city government works alongside the community.”

Dear King County Council, Our County needs more buses! Our transit network deserves more investments and are a necessary to meet King County’s equity goals. We urge you to investigate a countywide transit funding measure for an election within the next year.
Why Now? A robust bus network, coupled with recent investment in Link Light Rail, provides a viable and affordable way to navigate the region.
