In a lot of ways, the environmentalism of my parents' generation didn't ask anyone to sacrifice anything. People still drove (but it was a Prius), lived in the burbs (but with a beautiful garden), bought supermarket food (but bought organic). It was an aesthetic choice as much as anything. 🧵

just remembered being taught about risk as a part of life in elementary school—for example, if we wanted everyone to be safe while driving, cars would have to go 20 mph tops and we'd have overwhelming seat belt and airbag systems! funny to think about in the context of being a Vision Zero advocate

updated denny.intcreator.com to show when the Yale slip lane closed. it might take a while for drivers to learn the new pattern (and an automated camera to ticket people for making illegal turns) but we should see a downward trend in travel times even before the bus lanes go in. for ALL VEHICLES.

Part of the reason other nations have rich social safety nets is that they also have a sense of shared civic identity that comes from shared public space. When great parks are handed over to cars, people in them become more guarded, more defensive, and stingier in all kinds of unexpected ways.
