Starting from a low baseline in the Pacific Northwest (i.e. historically a lot of hydro), but both Oregon and Washington have actually increased the carbon intensity of their electricity since 1990.

Piggybacking on what Jason said in another post on the causes of NIMBYs, I feel that a lot of it is nostalgia for things that just don't exist in the same way. People change, cities change, change is the constant. Trying to get back to the past is so clearly not the way forward.

There’s in fact a huge literature on this, and multiple studies on Seattle specifically. The short of it is people tend to value trees, but they value their neighbors’ trees more. This is particularly true of big trees, likely due to maintenance and hazard effects.

In San Francisco, Lurie's RV ban—on which Dan Strauss' similar proposed ban in Seattle appears to be modeled—hasn't gotten people into shelter, but it has pushed them outside city limits, often after losing their RVs and becoming unsheltered. Is this what "success" will look like here?

S.F. cracked down on RV dwellers. A year later, many have left the city altogether.
Data shows that a year after San Francisco's RV ban, 1/3 of RV dwellers using city aid have moved outside city limits.

Wow. Budget director Ali Pennucci says there were around $78 million in one-time budget adds in the 2026 budget. $10-15 million of these one-time adds were made ongoing in the 2027 budget proposal.

I liked this article, but I take issue with two important points: 1) There is no “income tax” the city is considering as far as I know. Maybe they’re referring to a city cap gains but that’s not the same thing.

It is striking to hear the Director of Seattle's Office of Housing talk about how the biggest success metric that the city has when it comes to housing funds is that a major affordable housing provider in the city has not yet fully collapsed.

Rules for Left(ish) Mayors: Find comrades in the bureaucracy. You'll be judged by how well the city functions under your direct control. Smart & creative lower-level staff are bottled up by managers who got their positions by supporting the status quo. Find your people & elevate them when you win.

Many of us who live in Seattle don't have a ton of personal space. That's why the public spaces we all share are so important. My proposed budget includes $1.4 million for 12 new public restrooms across Seattle so everyone can explore our beautiful city with comfort and confidence.

This is actually so funny to me. No, the Seattle mayor is not going to take it upon herself to find a permanent source of funding for a council created program in which they get to pick their own transportation projects to be funded and then take credit for them. I can't believe you brought it up.

When Seattle transit advocates successfully fought against the cap on the city's share of a pass-through on the new countywide 0.1% sales tax this summer...that resulted in a $4.7 million annual contribution to SDOT's budget that is now preventing cuts to urban forestry & bridge maintenance.

In 2027 Seattle's minimum wage will be $22.14 per hour. That's more than THREE TIMES the federal minimum wage of $7.25 an hour—a rate that hasn't been raised since 2009. And yet somehow we're not the jobless wasteland orthodox economics would predict. Weird.

I know some activists worry that if the City gets additional progressive revenue, the bulk would go straight to SPD. Given the council is currently splitting hairs about $5m in food access right after SNAP cuts in the name of "public safety," their concerns seem at least somewhat justified.

In Kettle's case, he wants something that costs money (150 officers). He doesn't have a way to pay for it, but he still wants it. This incongruous "invest *and* cut" attitude seems to have become incredibly common now among "pro-business Democrats" or "money Democrats" or whatever term you'd prefer.

They won't say what they would cut. But they demand that "spending" be reduced, even though we've already been making cuts for years. We've been doing cuts and revenue because Democrats in #waleg and elsewhere didn't want a revenue-only approach. And yet, commentators still say we're "overspending."

This is emblematic of something bigger happening in our politics right now: business organizations such as the Washington Roundtable and the Seattle Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce are simultaneously eagerly campaigning for austerity while they also campaign for investments in their own priorities.
