“Paris has embarked on a grand transformation, planting 155k trees, adding hundreds of kms of bike lanes, pedestrianising 300 school streets and banning cars from the banks of the Seine. Parking has been turned into green space…Fewer parents fear their child being run over when they walk to school.”

Under Anne Hidalgo – mayor for 12 years until last week – the French capital added bike lanes, cut traffic and reclaimed public space, but not without resistance

A person rides a bike up a sunlit street in the evening; a pedestrian waits to cross outside of a classic pub frontage for ‘The Conan Doyle’ with a black facade and golden trim, with hanging plants outside. The weather is dry, and in the background we can see rising sandstone and glass shops and offices under a blue sky, as well as the steps leading up to a cathedral building as passers-by pass by.

Edinburgh Bike Charity launches crowdfunder after flash flooding forced workshop to close

The Bike Station, a Scottish charity which promotes cycling through sales of affordable refurbished bikes and a variety of community programmes including a free library of children's bikes, has launched a fundraiser after flash flooding in Edinburgh’s Old Town affected its Tollcross branch.

On 19 August 2026, extremely heavy rainfall led to flash flooding in several areas of the Old Town including South Bridge and the Grassmarket. At the same time, the basement workshop of The Bike Station in Tollcross was flooded, forcing staff to evacuate, and causing damage which took over a week to repair.

While The Bike Station has now re-opened its Tollcross branch, the charity is feeling the impact of losing over a week of work and revenue during its busiest time of the year, with demand for bikes at its highest and the communities programme in full swing as schools return from summer holidays. In the wake of the flood, the charity has launched an online fundraiser, aiming to raise £10,000 to support the ongoing recovery of the Tollcross workshop, and its varied community projects working with children and young people, asylum seekers, and groups which are underrepresented in cycling.

“We are so proud of our amazing mechanic and branch team for the work that they do year-round, and we are particularly proud of the pace at which they have been able to recover and rebuild from this flood. Extreme weather events are only going to happen more often due to climate change, so we are more determined than ever to carry on our work helping everyone to enjoy a sustainable, and joyful, mode of transport.” Sasha Taylor, CEO of The Bike Station.

The crowdfunder can is available via this link, and more information about the work of The Bike Station is on the website.

Photos are available here.

For any further information please contact Sarah McArthur at sarah.mcarthur@thebikestation.org.…

Extreme weather makes The Bike Station’s mission even more important- support us to get more people using sustainable and joyful transport.

August in Edinburgh is always busy!! - but this August was also difficult. Will you help us to raise £10,000 to ensure more people can choose cycling? Everything you donate will be match-funded by Spokes, up to £5000!

August is one of our busiest times at The Bike Station- especially in Tollcross. Our branch is buzzing as more people want to get moving on two wheels. We refurbish over 125 bikes in the month. Downstairs in the tiny but mighty Tollcross workshop, our amazing mechanics work their magic and dozens of high quality lovingly refurbished bikes. For August and September everyone is on full speed to keep up with demand.

That is, until extreme weather brings everything to a stop

Sat for a coffee at Elm Row and counted the traffic for 15 minutes: 343 pedestrians 52 cyclists 2 cars Remind me why we’ve turned this public square into a car park? This is probably the best connected retail location in Scotland - trams, buses, walkable, busy cycle lane. Why ruin it?

Road is still closed but The Innocent Path is not restricted. The crossing itself is out of action, but with the road closed there's no need for it and you can cross a few metres east. #EdTravCyc Token picture of broken water main.

An insight into cycling trends - the introduction of Voi bikes has added about 500 additional cyclists per day to Leith Walk; the tram closure added another 250 at the peak. The Voi effect is much larger at the weekend, while the inverse is true for the tram.

There's something amazing about being in a peloton of 40+ bikes on the cycle lane heading home. Every driver at the front of a queue of side-street traffic... every person peering out of a bus window... every passer-by gets the message: "Oh wow, yeah, people are using this stuff". Never gets old.

My view travelling home by bike: Loads of people cycling on the South City Way cycle lane on Victoria Road in Govanhill in the Southside of Glasgow, during evening rush hour. A woman in front of me wears an incredibly fetching gold coloured helmet.

It's always great to read about someone like Zeeshan, who is now cycling for the first time! But, as the article mentions, a trike is much bigger & heavier than a bike, and requires a lot of strength and stamina to use. You can't keep up with non-disabled people on bikes using an unpowered trike.

Fantastic team effort today in Currie! We managed to reclaim a huge amount of the walkway from encroaching vegetation, from Haston Wall to Poets Glen, including steps and side paths. Started brushing out the moss collecting on the edges & removed graffiti from all signage. Amazing job folks, thanks!
