Highlander

Jonathan Melville will talk on the 1986 action fantasy, Highlander, and his new book, The Art & Making of Highlander.

A school trip to the Tower of London’s armoury inspired an American screenwriting student to write Highlander, the story of an immortal Scottish warrior who must fight for survival until the time of the Gathering in 1980s New York.
When the script found its way to two producers looking for a sure-fire hit, it attracted the interest of an imploding British film studio, an experimental music video director, a former James Bond, and a myopic actor playing a sword fighting expert who could barely see a few feet in front of him.
Jonathan Melville returns to discuss his decade-long research into the film that has led to two books on the subject.
Hear about missing Immortals, deleted scenes, and how a box office bomb became a cult favourite.

Jonathan will be selling (and signing) a limited number of copies of his new book for £40 – please let Gordon know in advance if you’d like one put aside on the night.

Swimming pool and leisure facilities reopen at WHEC
The pool and leisure facilities at Wester Hailes Education Centre (WHEC) have been refurbished and reopened on Thursday. This renovation of a valued local leisure asset will increase local access to sport, leisure and wellbeing. WHEC leisure facilities are open seven days for gym, swimming and fitness. Edinburgh Leisure say the needs of local residents have been "at the heart of the redevelopment, with improvements focused on activity spaces, inclusivity and the overall customer experience". The swimming pool offers lane swimming, diving and family sessions, with daytime access now also available to the fitness suite and new general-purpose studio.

Opening the doors at The Palm Houses
The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh (RBGE) – the Botanics – is a place which is very special to everyone in the capital. This autumn the world-leading institution is marking a distinct moment in the Garden’s history with the opening of the newly redeveloped A-listed Palm Houses on 2 October.  This is part of the Edinburgh Biomes programme, and is hailed as the most ambitious restoration scheme in the history of the Botanics. As well as plants to see, there is a new visitor experience with films and other multimedia and multisensory digital tours.
