The WAR ON WALKING has taken many forms around the world. It’s often as simple as how we signal who space is and isn’t for. Once our eyes are opened to all the ways we’ve prioritized cars over people, we can’t unsee it. Frustrating photo contributed by @stadsplanering.bsky.social. #WarOnWalking

Concern growing for welfare of missing Polish man who was last seen in Wester Hailes
Police are appealing for information to help trace Michal Oraczewski, 33, who is missing from Wester Hailes. He was reporting missing to police on Thursday, 3 September, 2026. The last confirmed sighting of Mr Oraczewski was in the Hailesland Grove area during the evening of Monday, 6 July, 2026. At this time, he suggested he was going to work in Glasgow. While it is not out of a character for himto not be in regular contact with people he knows, officers are growing concerned for his welfare. His first language is Polish, and he speaks fluent English.

Trams from Granton to the Edinburgh BioQuarter / Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh and Beyond Strategic Business Case
CEC Transport & Environment Committee 10.9.26, agenda item 7.61
Written deputation from Spokes

Exec Summary
[2 below] A big lesson from the Leith Walk section of the Newhaven extension is that separated bike lanes can bring significant pedestrian casualty reduction, in addition to preventing cyclist tramline crashes. A lesson from Foot of Walk to Ocean Terminal is that parallel cycleroutes (to avoid tramlined roads where segregation is not possible) must be integrated into the tram project, or risk years of delay after the start of tram operation.
[3 below] There is very strong Spokes membership support for a northern extension, but with roughly equal differing views on which of the two options it should use, or whether both are acceptable. For both route options, there remain substantial disadvantages to safe and/or enjoyable cycling, which will need to be addressed to the maximum extent possible if either option goes ahead.
[4 below] The southern route, which is now likely to be the Council immediate priority, and is heavily used by cyclists, presents extreme difficulties in ensuring safe cycling. We argue for single track running for the Bridges section, and segregated bike lanes south of St Patrick Square – the latter hopefully bringing the same casualty avoidance benefits seen by both pedestrians and cyclists on the fairly similar Leith Walk.

I am a regular cyclist, including along this route. I've been thinking carefully about all the options for taking the tram to North Edinburgh, and I think using the Roseburn Path, with the amendments now proposed, is the only realistic option. The path was, after all, a rail route for 100+ years.

Certainly true that Edinburgh has much better cycling infrastructure, and is generally a good place for bikes, than most other cities in UK (though not compared with many in EU) and most drivers are considerate of cyclists. 95% of time it's perfectly safe. But some places are very definitely not!

This from an Edinburgh cyclist, but I'm sure the feelings are shared by people who cycle anywhere in UK. I walk, cycle, go by bus or train, very occasionally drive, but only when I go out on a bike do I have in the back of my mind the question 'will I get there alive and uninjured'. @spokes.org.uk

Spokes members’ views on tramline & city centre controversies

Spokes operates through working groups of dedicated volunteers, not by referendum. However, in the rare case of major controversy or the need for further evidence we may conduct a survey to gauge the views of the wider membership, and whether our central decisions are reasonably compatible.

In this survey we sought member feedback on route options for the proposed northern tramline extension (Granton to City Centre) and on the relative roles of Princes Street and George Street for cycling.Northern Tramline Extension

On the northern tramline extension, there is very strong agreement (over 80%) on an extension. However marginally over a quarter of members (27%) say this must be via Orchard Brae, whilst marginally under a quarter (23%) say it must be via Roseburn; whilst 30% find both options acceptable. Thus, in total, 57% find the Orchard Brae route acceptable, and 53% the Roseburn route, a difference well within 95% confidence levels, as in the graph below from the above full report.

Importantly, comments suggest that support for either route is conditional on the preservation of safe, segregated active travel corridors on both.Princes Street / George Street

The Council is shortly taking decisions on the future of Princes Street – although whether that will finally settle anything, given the years of prevarication and changing of minds, remains to be seen! Whatever is decided for Princes Street will also have major implications for George Street, where the long-debated proposals remain in limbo due to the massive costs of the current design.

Spokes has always argued that high quality conditions for cycling (and certainly for walking) are essential in both streets. For many journeys, they are not alternatives, and indeed to use George Street as a Princes Street bypass, as parts of the Council sometimes suggest, would on some journeys entail crossing tramlines twice and/or turning across major traffic flows on and off the linking streets.

Our survey found that somewhat more members currently use George Street than Princes Street, but that there is huge suppressed demand for Princes Street. If in future cycle facilities on each street were equally good, around 30% would find Princes Street most useful for their journeys compared to 15% for George Street (30% would find both equally useful).

Princes Street is seen by many as a direct, scenic route with fewer junctions, but plagued by hazards, while George Street feels safer but is often an inconvenient detour. Comments suggest that concerns about safety on Princes Street cause many respondents to avoid it entirely – and indeeed 36% of respondents say they never cycle along Princes Street compared to 26% who never cycle along George Street.

There's a growing traffic problem at Granton's West Shore Rd. Because of the new venues there, a good coastal route for walkers and cyclists now has 100s of cars at weekends trying to find somewhere to park. Walkers are now restricted to a narrow pavement. Not great for cyclists either.

Followed by SW20ed #Edinburgh, Dr Scott Arthur MP (Edinburgh South West) 🌍🌈🌹 Spokes & Me – the 2026 #SpokesComp

In 2027 Spokes will be 50 years old! For our 2026 summer competition, we’d like to hear any way in which you have benefitted from Spokes being around – recently, ages ago, or through the years.

Maybe you bought one of our super maps and used it to devise a great commuter route, or for a brilliant weekend bike ride
Maybe you cycle across the Meadows every day, enjoying the car-freeness and the cherry blossom, not even knowing that it was illegal until an arduous years-long Spokes campaign way back in the last century!
Or maybe you are a dedicated campaigner who has been involved in loads of Spokes activities in the past – or now – and helped make a small contribution to a better world
Whatever your connection, Spokes member or not, if you are reading this, we’d love you to enter!

In judging the competition, we are wanting to know how Spokes being around made your life that bit better, gave you enjoyment, opportunity, personal satisfaction, health improvement or whatever. It’s not about how much you have done for Spokes (if anything), though if it’s made your life better in any way, it’s relevant. And you definitely don’t have to be a Spokes member to enter – it won’t affect the judging.Full prizelist

Transform Scotland

Transform Scotland
Holyrood 2026: What do party manifestos say on transport?

1 May 2026Key takeaways:

🟢 Lowering public transport fares the single largest issue.

🟢 Public transport infrastructure investment also a common theme.

🟢 Road maintenance & tackling road works also prominent.

🟠 Transport governance reform gets lots of attention.

🟠 Big spending commitments but minimal attention given to funding.

🔴 Active travel investment is largely neglected – or actively opposed.

🔴 Tired ‘War on the motorist’ tropes platformed by Tories & Reform.

🔴 Missing: Demand management, tackling SUVs, action on freight modal shift.part of the article, plus picture of pedestrians jammed in by huge SUV...

What’s missing is demand management. There are no proposals on road pricing or tackling the rise of larger, heavier vehicles like SUVs, despite their road safety and road damage impacts. The result is more spending on roads, without a credible plan to reduce car dependency and its harms to society.

Active travel

Active travel remains one of the most cost-effective transport interventions available, improving public health, cutting emissions and widening access to jobs and services. Yet it receives surprisingly limited attention across the manifestos. The Greens stand out for maintaining a clear commitment to allocate at least 10% of the transport budget to walking, wheeling and cycling.

Elsewhere, ambition appears to have softened. Labour makes exactly zero reference to active travel while the SNP steps back from its previous 10% spending commitment. This matters for fairness. Poor walking and cycling infrastructure disproportionately affects lower-income communities, limiting access to opportunity and locking in inequality.

Read more analysis of the manifestos from our members CPT Scotland (bus & coach focus) and Spokes (active travel focus).

Cycling side-by-side isn’t bad behaviour—it’s human behaviour. It’s how parents talk to their kids. How friends catch up. How communities form. If bicycle infrastructure is too narrow for people to ride and talk together, the problem isn’t the people. It’s the infrastructure. Nørrebro, Copenhagen.
