👍 "helping reduce reliance on vans" 🙋 Our latest #cargobike grant: £2K towards #CyclingGardeners #eCarla trailer --> www.spokes.org.uk/documents/ad... @edi.bike @cadi.scot @edfoc.bsky.social @chdot.bsky.social @laidbackbikes.bsky.social @edinreporter.bsky.social @joshpizpom.bsky.social @sw20.info

E-bike Carla Trailer Grant – Impact Report
We are very grateful to Spokes for the grant towards our e-bike Carla trailer. Thes e-bike/trailer combination is proving to be a useful addition to our operations, allowing us to replace a number of journeys that would previously have required the use of a van.
How we are using the e-bike trailer
We are primarily using it to transport tools and equipment to and from landscaping jobs, as well as removing and transporting green waste and other materials.
Previously, these journeys would generally have been made by van. The carrying capacity of the Carla trailer means that a surprising amount of equipment and material can be transported by bike, making it a practical alternative to the van for suitable jobs rather than simply an environmental gesture.
Benefits to the company
The e-bike and trailer are helping us reduce our reliance on vans, particularly for shorter journeys and work within Edinburgh. This brings a number of benefits, including reduced fuel use, lower vehicle running costs and fewer emissions associated with our work.
It can also be a very practical way of working in an urban environment. Using the e-bike can make it easier to move around congested areas and reduces the difficulties associated with finding suitable parking for a van close to a job.
Importantly, the e-bike and trailer also demonstrate to our customers that we are actively looking for practical ways to reduce the environmental impact of our operations.
Supporting new business
We believe the e-bike and trailer are also beginning to provide a commercial benefit.
We have secured a contract relating to Christmas trees for Edinburgh schools, and we believe that our ability and intention to deliver at least some of the trees using the e-bike and Carla trailer worked in our favour.
For schools in particular, there is an additional benefit in pupils and staff seeing deliveries being made in a more sustainable way. It provides a very vis…Report, page 2

Our aim is not to suggest that an e-bike can replace a van for every job, but to use the most
appropriate form of transport for each task. Where loads, distances and circumstances allow, the ebike
and Carla trailer give us a practical, lower-cost and lower-emission alternative.
The support from Spokes has therefore helped us make a tangible change to the way we operate. As
well as reducing van journeys, the e-bike/trailer combination is helping us demonstrate our
environmental commitments to customers and may already be contributing to our ability to win new
work.
We are looking forward to expanding its use as part of our day-to-day operations.

Sure, these things cost money which is very limited. But so long as the council keeps finding it to: 🅰️ do stupid active transport stuff that's of marginal-to-zero benefit 🅱️ prioritise removing stuff already in the ground to placate segments of electorate Then it's a deliberate choice.

It’s worth looking into attempts at bus rapid transit and guided busways to understand. One question would be is there a legal mechanism for banning / towing parking blocking busway in the same way legislation exists for doing this adjacent to tram lines. Because someone _will_ flout rules.

Always odd that we couldn't possibly put a bike lane in here because of traffic, but a car parked in the turning lane, which completely fucks the traffic flow, is just an understandable rule-bend.

Rolling back existing active travel and failing to implement other routes doesn’t help the councils case. Active travellers will hold on with a death grip to any existing facilities until the council is seen to be comfortable taking space away from cars and drivers.

Before that, police officers have a duty to know what the law is, as a minimum required competence. The regulations around what constitute an e-bike are crystal clear, and all e-bikes are legally compliant by definition. These comments raise questions about the competence of the sergeant quoted.

The ongoing uncertainty surrounding what does and doesn’t constitute an e-bike by police forces is completely unacceptable. Especially as the definition is really clear. If it doesn’t meet EAPC regulations, then it’s not an e-bike. Why are various police forces struggling with this?

The constant pictures from London showing rain gardens, new street trees, places to sit, bike lanes and filtered streets show what could be achieved locally in South West #Edinburgh and across the city*.
Rain garden in front of a cobbled street that has been filtered to remove traffic. A new business has started as it’s now a pleasant place to be rather than a rat run. Is it London? No, it’s Leith. Widened pavement with new trees, plants and places to sit, with a new setted cycle lane. In the background is a bus gate to help prioritise public transport and cut rat running. London? No, it Leith. Newly planted rain garden and unidirectional cycle lane on a formerly four lane street that has been reduced to only one lane each way giving more space to pedestrians and cyclists and significantly reducing the speed of traffic for safety and reduced noise. Paris? Not, it’s Glasgow. A bus stop and cycle lane. There is fixed permanent seating next to the bus stop on this formerly four lane carriageway.
