I keep seeing this Semafor graph that seems to show the Trump administration’s effect on international visits is comparable to the pandemic. My first thought was “that can’t be true” and indeed it is not. This is monthly data. We only have to Jun/Aug 2026. The lines are over-fitted to the months.

This @the-downballot.com piece is an important analysis! Its significance becomes clearer in the light of @gelliottmorris.com's account of how "all polls are models now." substack.com/inbox/post/2... [Nerd warning] You can describe this in the mathematics of control theory - short thread 1/n

All polls are models now
Traditional polling is dead. A new paradigm of public opinion research has high uncertainty, and pollsters need to do a better job communicating about error.

A journal cover page for "An analytical heterogeneous agent macro model of concentration, markups, and falling labour shares" by Karsten Kohler, Jo Michell and Ayoze Alfageme, published in the Journal of Economic Dynamics and Control.

The abstract text is: This paper presents an analytical heterogeneous agent model (HAM) to explore micro-level concentration dynamics and their effects on macro-level distribution and growth. It contributes to recent work on macroeconomic agent-based models (ABMs) by comparing a small-scale ABM with bilateral firm-customer matching to a simplified HAM without direct agent interactions. The HAM replicates key ABM results while allowing for analytical solutions. In the model, larger firms benefit from lower unit costs due to economies of scale, gain larger market shares, and set higher markups. More profitable firms temporarily grow faster, leading to endogenous changes in the firm size distribution. The resulting right-skewed distributions create a divergence between the average profit share across firms and the aggregate profit share, which is driven by the largest firms. The decline in the labour share reduces aggregate consumption and slows growth. Despite its simplicity, the model captures key empirical patterns related to superstar firms and declining labour shares.

One of the most insane things about the ~8 years of legal sports gambling in America is the off-the-charts _volume_ of betting Hollenbeck et al. (2024) reports an online-bet handle in some states like Indiana on the order of ~$1,500 per capita per month papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers....
Table 2 of The Financial Consequences of Legalized Sports Gambling, showing average handle by channel per state (excluding Nevada). The data does not include handles for states where tribal lands run the offline sports gambling market.

It shows a cumulative monthly handle of $38.28 billion in New York, $23.41 billion in New Jersey, $22.57 billion in Illinois, $22.06 billion in Pennsylvania, $11.95 billion in Colorado, $10.98 billion in Indiana, $10.05 billion in Michigan, and more. In these big-online-betting states, the monthly online-bet handle amounts to between $1,000 and $2,000 per capita. (Of course, not all people bet on sports, so the actual per-bettor handle is even higher.)

It's kind of weird how watering down Net Zero has become a political litmus test in Labour. Net Zero was in the last TORY manifesto!
We are proud of our record and remain committed to delivering net zero by 2050. Today the UK is home to the five largest offshore wind farms in the world. Half of our electricity comes from renewables, compared to just 7% when Labour were last in office. We have reduced emissions further and faster than any of our competitors and the UK is the first major economy to get halfway to net zero. And we have done this while growing our economy by 80%, demonstrating to other countries that there is a positive economic path to tackling climate change.

The strangest thing happened today. We went to the uninhabited island of Lunga, west of Mull, to look at the puffins nesting there. I was just taking photos when I felt a thump as something landed quite heavily in my head. It was a puffin! It stayed for about a minute before flying off.
A man with his back to the camera, wearing a blue jacket and a grey woolen hat. A puffin is sitting on top of his head. On the left, an arm holding a mobile phone can be seen. In the background, a green slope and the sea beyond. In this photo the puffin is taking off.

The pardoned guy profiled in this story was convicted of tampering diesel trucks to remove emissions controls In 2020, the EPA estimated 550,000 diesel trucks on US roads had been illegally modded in this way, roughly 15% of all non-grandfathered-in diesel trucks www.epa.gov/enforcement/...
Based on this analysis, for the cases that EPA has investigated (further described in Sections 3 through 5), AED estimates that the emissions controls have been removed from more than 550,000 diesel pickup trucks in the last decade. As a result of this tampering, more than 570,000 tons of excess oxides of nitrogen (NOx) and 5,000 tons of -articulate matter (PM) will be emitted by these tampered trucks over the lifetime of the vehicles. These tampered trucks constitute approximately 15 percent of the national population of diesel trucks that were originally certified with emissions controls. But, due to their severe excess NOx emissions, these trucks have an air quality impact equivale to adding more than 9 million additional (compliant, non-tampered)
diesel pickup trucks to our roads. This Report describes these estimates in greater detail and explains AED's underlying analysis.
